Found this video from the channel Like Stories of Old and wanted to share. Felt like it hit the nail on the head for a phenomenon I feel like I've been experiencing with a lot of more modern movies but couldn't quite articulate what felt off.

Every piece of clothing looks 100% crisp and off the rack, like they still have the tags on and they'll try to return them after the shoot to save a buck.

Yea, it's fine if it's a high society thing with suits and evening dresses, but when your characters in a post-apocalyptic dystopia are wearing clothes that look like the PA bought them at a store just 15 minutes ago... oof.

I was about to post the same video with a similar remark, as it does indeed do a good job of finding a concrete vocabulary for the usual rather vague thing to say that movies "don't feel" right anymore. The video doesn't go into much details about the reasons behind this switch, but there is a short mention in the middle about how the filmmakers are basically responding to the producers constant need for change in post-production. Since they aren't able to fully commit to a unique look, a creative lighting or camera angle, they have to play it safe - so shots are just done in the most neutral bland way, as that is the best foundation to change this later in post-production. And that really shows as many things just feel samey and uninspired.

Producer meddling is also why things are samey and uninspired in the first place. A good movie is one where a director has a vision and orchestrates all levels of production to make them come together to realize that.

When the money people call the shots, and the director is just their figurehead on the ground, you'll never make something inspired.

For all George Lucas dabbled in fixing things in post and not being able to "speak actor," Star Wars (original trilogy and prequels) worked because they were something he had in his head and wanted to realize, even if it required inventing technologies that didn't exist. Producers in boardrooms are how we get the sequels, failing to expand the living, breathing world that Lucas created.

Not movies, but recently I've been watching the first Kamen Rider series and I love how "simple" the environments look, also the crispiness of the analog film adds a cozy tone to it.
