I'm not going to pretend to be well versed in US law or study of the constitution, but is he really suggesting that the president gets to be in charge of interpreting the constitution?...

You lost sight of the oath that you took when you started at the Department of Justice by suggesting
that you retain discretion to interpret the Constitution in a manner inconsistent with the policies of
a democratically elected President and a Senate- confirmed Attorney General.

I'm not going to pretend to be well versed in US law or study of the constitution, but is he really suggesting that the president gets to be in charge of interpreting the constitution? That's...not how it works? Maybe I'm misreading or misinterpreting what he's saying here? Do I just have a bad grasp on politics?

Thanks for the detailed reply! I've been considering at some point upgrading to a machine that can roast more in one go, as well as considering switching to a drum style roaster. Any suggestions on something that is decent for home use but doesn't absolutely break the bank? It doesn't have to be perfect and I'm definitely not expecting professional quality control (as evidenced by my very entry level FreshRoast) but I've enjoyed getting into the hobby and would be interested in suggestions for other equipment.

So I have a Fresh Roast SR540 that does the roasting for me. I buy the green coffee from the same site there (Sweet Maria's). It definitely takes some practice to figure out the right timings/temperature/fan settings, but overall wasn't too difficult. I think I've dialed it into something I'm fairly happy with. I generally start with it on highest fan settings and mid to low temp for the first minute, turn down the fan and turn the heat up for a few more minutes, then let it finish roasting at low-med fan with med-high heat. Overall roasting takes 10-15 minutes. This version only makes about 114g of green coffee each time you roast, and you need to rest it for 30 minutes in between roasts, so it does require me to roast fairly regularly. That said it doesn't take all that long and it does keep me with fresh coffee on the regular at a price that's cheaper than buying pre-roasted.

I'm not going to say it's the best cup of coffee ever, but it's consistently very good (especially if you find beans you like) and there's just something extra satisfying about drinking coffee from beans you roasted yourself.

A few things to keep in mind if you do decide you want to try this out:

    • You would think roasting the coffee would make your house smell heavenly. It does NOT. The actual roasting process has a pretty displeasing smell, so it's ideal if you can have a window or two open with good ventilation in the area you are roasting. If you have multiple people in the house, they will probably hate you. The actual roasted coffee smell though of the beans once you put them in their storage is great.
    • The roasting process produces a lot of coffee chaff. The machine I linked does a good job of collecting most of it in the upper cage, but there likely will still be some in the coffee. It generally doesn't alter the flavor of the coffee but it can be annoying to deal with. It also can fly everywhere if you're emptying the top cage into the garbage. I tend to use a vacuum to get rid of the chaff from the machine top to avoid it going everywhere.
    • There are various machines that you can use to roast at home that have different styles, so the one I linked is very much just entry level. Some people claim you can roast in an air fryer or in your oven, but I highly recommend against this as it doesn't give you the same type of control as a proper dedicated machine does (even entry level) and the chaff is also a fire hazard.

Overall, I do recommend an entry level machine and playing around with it if you're interested in roasting at home. It's definitely not for everyone but I've enjoyed the process and I think it can be worth it. If you do decide to give it a whirl, feel free to ping me for any other tips to try and get roast consistency.

New to the server this last week or so, seemed to have run into a lot of you in the server already so thanks for being welcoming!

I've mostly been spending this first bit of time setting up a home base and connecting to the main town. Finally added a more stylized roof to the house and have cleaned up some of the interior and other aesthetics. Eventually I plan to try and make an automated wheat farm in the back of the property along with some other general nice to haves, but those would be more longer term while I get reacquainted with the game. Been years since I played and there are so many new and interesting things that have been added.

I have plenty of exploring to do with everyone else's builds and hope to gather some inspiration from everyone else. I've been blown away with everyone's creativity and knowledge of how the game objects interact to create awesome final designs.

I was planning on updating the underwater section to be mostly glass for aesthetics and then maybe working on laying the groundwork for the line to move on towards the south/southwestern path to your research lab area.

Was also going to see if you wanted to have the line stop at your place as well since it's right by mine. I'm planning on expanding that rail out a bit at some point anyway, just not sure where.

Edit: Looking at the Bluemap maybe it can follow the river south a bit past your place and head towards some structures in the south/southwest, such as -489x 336z, -405x 812z, and -237x 917z, and beyond. There seem to be some towns even further south from those areas.

So I don't play violin but I did look into this at one point. From what I recall, it's more of a legend at this point. There's evidence that there was a cooler period of time from around 1650-1750 which resulted in the trees during this era to be denser than modern trees, which would result in a more dense wood used in the violins, and thus better resonance in the instrument. With that said, blind experiments over the years have found no significant differences between a Stradivarius and modern high-quality violins. I think it's more a testament to how well made they were at that time in history more than anything. They achieved legendary status because the sound was so much better than anything else at that time, and it stuck as a status symbol of peak quality and sound.

I think there's a lot to be said though that an instrument from 300+ years ago can compare similarly in sound quality to modern higher end models.

Some cursory googling about compatibility with Linux, looks like you can get most of the gestures to work as well through Solaar. Highly recommend. I especially love the thumb scroll wheel, I have it set to navigate between tabs when in browsers, and also scroll horizontally in spreadsheets.

In a big fan of the way OSRS generally handles cosmetics. None of them can really be bought with out of game money (excluding spending bonds for in game money to then but off the grand exchange from other players), but then the most prestigious cosmetics are untradeable, meaning that you actually have to earn them in game through playing and there's no way to buy them (no legit way to buy them at least). It hits home with the theme of "I earned this" that I used to love about unlockables of games of old, rather than "I bought it because it looked cool".

It also helps that most of the cosmetics in the game fit thematically.

Hundreds and hundreds of times I have been burned by reading about something Trump did, only to find out that it is either not out of the ordinary for a president to do or only slightly out of the ordinary and more in line with Ronald Reagan type bullshit (as in, something that is going to screw us over for generations, but not exactly fascist Italy or Nazi Germany).

I think Jon Stewart had a good segment kind of touching this recently on The Daily Show where he touches on the media's reaction to basically anything he does, and I think I agree with Jon on this. There's so many times where the media cries outrage over things that, if it was any other president, would not even be newsworthy. Unfortunately all this does is basically empower him further, because it distracts us from the things that actually are worth getting up in arms about, and he can just cry to the media that they are "unfair" to him so his supporters can just ignore the more heinous stuff as "fake news".

I despise Trump and everything he stands for, but the media is doing no favors with their coverage of his more routine actions.

In addition to the exhaustion, I feel like last time it felt like an accident. Like no one expected him to win, so people didn't get out and vote, and it felt like he just happened into this. With it feeling like an accident, everyone was more willing to push back on all the bullshit because this really wasn't supposed to happen.

This time around, he won. No question about it. He won the electoral college, and the popular vote. It wasn't an accident. The American people voted for this. The American people wanted this.

It just feels like there's nothing else to really do. Protesting isn't going to change anything. All the bullshit he already pulled, all the hate he spews, is supported by over 70m Americans. So it's basically just do what we can to survive the next 4 years, look out for our neighbors who may be most negatively impacted by the hateful and xenophobic motivations of the administration, and try to lay the ground work to undo the damage 4 years from now.

As a side, I will be honest that I doubt most of his policies will affect me directly. I'm not an immigrant, I'm not a threat of deportation, I'm not in a marginalized group, and I'm well enough off financially that any price increases from tariffs won't put me on the streets. But that's the kicker. It's not about me. I just wish more Americans had empathy for those who aren't in their situation and understood the ramifications of this administrations actions. The sad part is I think many do understand the ramifications, they just don't have the empathy to care because it doesn't affect them personally.

I will say though Western Washington has the added unfortunate factor of not really having the ability to expand outward. Mountains on the right, ocean on the left. Really need to expand density.

It's such a blatantly unconstitutional order that is egregiously arguing in bad faith to try and twist the meaning of the amendment. Normally I'd think with how straightforward the amendment and precedent is I'd be unconcerned about this holding up, but the state of our current supreme court just absolutely terrifies me, since this is likely to land on their desk and we have no idea how they will rule.

You can argue all day whether or not birthright citizenship should still be a thing in the United States. But if you want to get rid of it, take the proper channels to propose a constitutional amendment. Stop trying to circumvent the constitution in bad faith through executive orders.

I think you're still missing the biggest issue with this though. The internet doesn't work like a brick and mortar store. Even if all the US based porn companies complied with this in good faith and created some sort of secure database to store ID checks, and even if it did successfully block all minors from accessing the sites, and even if there were no bad actors that store this data in a way they said they won't, it still doesn't prevent minors from accessing the thousands of other porn sites that are not hosted in the US or subject to US laws. People will literally just go to the next available site that doesn't ask for their ID, which will likely be a sketchier site anyway.

The only real way I see any meaningful sort of restricting access is if it was done nationwide similar to China's "Great Firewall" where the government basically is the one that monitors and restricts access to all internet traffic, and I don't believe that's a good idea for a whole host of reasons.

I'm not opposed to barriers for children accessing porn, but they need to be implemented in a way that actually understands how the internet works and it needs to reasonable and feasible in its approach. I don't pretend to know what the best solution is, but I definitely can see far too many problems with the ones that have been proposed to know it's not a good idea at all.

I know I'm in the minority on this but honestly any barrier to getting unlimited porn for free is a good thing for our kids and our society.

I don't think you're in the minority of this at all. I think what you're in the minority of is thinking that these laws are a good/effective way to achieve that end goal.

I don't know anyone from the side that is against these laws saying "yes , more free porn for children is all fine and dandy". It's really that these laws don't actually achieve the goal of making it safer, while having many more negative consequences from privacy and other concerns.

I also understand the argument regarding "well we have laws elsewhere such as you can't sell alcohol to minors, I don't see asking for ID here as any different". I contest it is very different. For starters, if you go to a liquor store and present your ID, they aren't taking your ID, making copies of it, and storing it in a database. You show them and move on. It's not stored and can't be accessed for future nefarious purposes. Secondly the Internet works nothing like a brick and mortar store. Children can easily still access sites that don't follow these laws or are based out of different countries. Most of these sites will be even sketchier and more risky than the ones that were regulated or banned. Imagine if brick and mortar stores worked like the Internet. You'd have a liquor store with 50 clerks at checkout. Maybe 10 of them follow the law and ask for an ID, but the other 40 are perhaps sketchier or subject to laws of different countries where your alcohol ban doesn't apply. Minors walking into this store would just use one of the 40 clerks that will still sell them alcohol. The ban would not be effective at all.

And that's really the main point. The laws being proposed really won't have the effect it's stating, and the negative consequences far outweigh the positives.

Realistically this needs to come down to parents properly educating their children about the dangers in some online porn and how it often is not representative of healthy sexual relationships. That's a tough conversation though.
