Personally I feel like it's highly dependant on the type of movie and story being told. A comedy? 92 minutes is probably about right. Action thriller? 92-120 probably about right. Episodic adventure trilogy with multiple character stories being followed? Those 3 hour Lord of the Rings films, while long, feel quite appropriate to properly tell the story that needs to be told.

There's a lot of different factors I feel would need to go into the "ideal" running time of a movie. There's no way LotR would have been able to tell the story it needed in 92 minutes.

I wonder if this is just a product of the time I grew up, where animation and graphics were completely unable to look realistic, so artist had to work with the technologies we had at the time, which gave the animations their own unique charm and style. To me I love this, I don't need hyper realistic animations. In fact I prefer the more simplistic but stylistic animations of the originals. Don't get me wrong, the tech is incredible and it looks phenomenal. But I don't want to watch an entire movie of it. I'd rather look at the less impressive more stylistic approach like the originals. It just has a better feel like it's trying to be a movie and an actual story, rather than just an excuse to show off their new 3d rendering in a re-hashed story. The new ones give me uncanny valley vibes because they are trying to hard to be realistic, and it's off-putting.

It's also the picture that high level executives paint, when they talk about technology "not replacing" workers but rather "complementing them" and "making them more efficient". Sure, and individual worker may now be more efficient, and their job is not 100% being replaced by the technology, but they say it's not replacing the workers, and then in the same breath they use the increased efficiencies as an excuse to lay off or not backfill positions. So the end result is the same. The technology does in fact, replace workers, even if it's not a 1 to 1 job description.

Replacing human labor with automation isn't in and of itself a bad thing. If automation can make a task more efficient and still have the same or better outcome with less people, then great! Use those people for other tasks in the company. It just really irks me the wrong way and feels extremely dishonest when high level executives try to paint it as some sort of helping hand to their employees when the reality is they are still turning around and reducing headcount as a result, oftentimes with worse customer experience in the process.

I feel like the issue with them being disgusting is mostly because they don't invest in a proper service to clean it regularly and make sure it's not in a state of disrepair. I've seen some pristine public toilets. I've seen some absolutely horrendous "private, key only for paying customers" toilets. I agree that yes, public ones in general are more likely to have issues, there's no reason it can't be properly maintained. They just don't typically hire someone to do it regularly.

I've been having a hard time crafting a reply to this because I feel like you arguing with me about a point I wasn't really making. My point wasn't "too bad for those this doesn't help", and it wasn't that we should just disregard the group that it doesn't help. My point was "this doesn't help group A therefore we shouldn't help group B" is not a good argument.

They don't want other people to suffer, they want to be made somewhat whole, now that the opportunity is available

I think this is where my point kinda comes in. It's fine to want to be made somewhat whole now that the opportunity is available. It's fine to be annoyed or angry that you aren't being made whole while others are just because you missed a time window. What's not fine is saying "I'm against making others whole because I'm left out". I don't buy that as a valid argument against the policy.

For what it's worth, I don't think student loan forgiveness is a good solution to the actual problem at hand, I think they need to go after the more institutional problems with higher education. But I think if my options are between student loan forgiveness for some, or no student loan forgiveness for anyone, I'd rather pick the option that actually helps some. I say this as someone who will not benefit in the slightest from this and had to pay out of pocket for some of my education.

I feel like on the first part, it still boils down to "I didn't get to have this advantage for myself, so therefore no one else can because it's not fair for me". I don't think it's a good argument. Yes it sucks that you wouldn't qualify for the assistance, but that doesn't mean we should automatically make other suffer the same fate. And I say that as someone who isn't sold on the idea of debt forgiveness, because I think we need to go further and fix the institutional problems with higher education rather than just sticking a bandaid on things.

As for college itself, I also kinda fall into the "degree doesn't match current job" description, but I don't feel like my college time was a waste. There were a lot of valuable social and intellectual experiences that made it 100% worth it. A lot of times college can provide someone with the skills to be successful even if it's not for what they studied. It's more of a mindset that gets taught. The real problem is how much college costs these days which is what I was mentioning in the first half, that we need to fix the institutions problems. As a whole, while college may not be for everyone, it's generally a net benefit when we are able to provide the opportunity of higher education for more people. We need to work on reducing that cost though so these students are in debt for decades after.

I think you're conflating two unrelated things. The alternative of student debt forgiveness isn't "slashing public department funding". The alternative of student debt forgiveness is...well not forgiving the debt. I think you're conflating that being against student debt forgiveness as a solution (which it's not) = supporting the other party and their policies of what they will do. Thats just not the case. You can be against student debt forgiveness as a solution while still agreeing Biden as a whole.

And maybe saying it's just "buying votes" isn't the right term, but it's not really addressing the actual issues, it's just a surface level feel-good policy that will absolutely help a very specific demographic, but then do nothing to solve the actual problems.

Is it better than nothing? Maybe. It certainly would be a major lift to those who desperately need it. But I'd rather have our policy be something that fixes the systemic issues rather than just put a bandaid on an open wound. If we are going to forgive the debt, I think it's great we are directly benefiting and helping those in need. But I want to see us take it a step further. I don't want this to be the "solution" and then calling it a day.

I feel like my takeaway from this video wasn't "AI bad", it was more calling out that the people who are championing AI as this seemingly amazing productivity tool to help out workers almost always intentionally leave out the fact that it's going to actually displace and replace a lot of their workforce and they are just doing it to save a buck. Meanwhile, as a consequence, the same "solution" gets championed over and over again by politicians, that these workers will be "retrained" to different fields. It's the same story that's been going on from Bush to Biden. That was the point.

Hell I've seen it at my work place. A department was championing how they can use AI now to "assist" our customer service agents, and they went into details about how it will be able to make the agents more productive and where it can save time and money. They specifically left out the part about how they will eventually go through layoffs and then not replace these workers because "AI has given us better efficiencies".

And to be clear, needing less people to do the work is great, if the quality comes out the same or better. Oftentimes though that isn't the case, and it tends to be just an increase on a company's bottom line at the expense of the human element. Someone else pointed out how this more about capitalism rather than AI and I think I agree, which was also kinda the point of why they had the clip of "retraining employees" spouted by all the presidents since Bush. It's the same cycle of "efficiency gain improved, people get laid off and need to go into different fields" we've been seeing for decades. And I think that's the point of the video. It's not as simple as "AI bad", its more about the cycle as a whole and how disingenuous the people at the top are about how great they are trying to sell it as.

Expanding designated wilderness areas or other protections I think would make more sense.

Man I really wish this was true in my area, but feels like it's really just the realities of living in a high cost of living area. My monthly payment for a mortgage on basically any livable house in this area would be 2-3x what I'm paying in rent. I've basically accepted that I'm never owning a home here and I'll need to move to a lower cost of living area if I want to own something eventually. Hell, the house I'm currently renting for $2,500/mo would have a mortgage of over $5,500/mo if I were to try buying it today.

Can't say I'm a fan of the changes in the unis so far but I also feel like it's been blown way out of proportion. The article does a good job of breaking down where a lot of the decision making actually came from with these changes and why a lot of people's anger at fanatics (while justifiable with a lot of past experience), may be a bit misplaced in this instance.

I think at the end of the day though, if we are asking who is responsible for the new uniforms?, the answer really comes down to the MLB. They signed off on the changes at the end of the day. If you are shopping for sub contractor and don't like the work that someone does, you have them fix it or move to someone else. MLB clearly was fine with the changes and has the ultimate final say of the specs if they so choose.

He’s shown time and time again that he doesn’t view the fans of his game as just a profit source to be milked. If you show up your opponent like that, you need to be ready to expect a response. But the response with a crosscheck to the head was completely inappropriate. This is how I feel. Admittedly I haven't kept up with all of the recent ones, but I remember watching the first Jurassic World and being completely underwhelmed. It seemed like there was no real plot. The plot revolved around people making the absolute worst, most nonsense decisions they could make in order for the plot to drive forward. I just couldn't get into the movie because it felt like none of the characters were making believable decisions.

Not to mention that if you found an abandoned vehicle that hasn't been started or maintained in 15+ years, it's definitely not starting up right away...

100% real estate issues, and likely some additional reasons, but not related to productivity. My company did the same. Was one of the first to tell us to work from home even before it was mandated when covid was starting up, we all praised them for thinking of employees first. Things were great for a while.

My industry got hit hard this last year or two, and when they told us we were going to be forced to return to office for the usual BS reasons ("increased collaboration" and "increased chance encounters", whatever that means), we all suspected it was twofold:

    1. Real estate investments were down so they wanted to create artificial demand and make it look like the offices were in use and needed.

    2. They knew the move would make people quit so it was a way to reduce headcount without actually having to pay severance when letting people go.

Sure enough when we got our financial results for the quarter, "lower than expected real estate investments" was quoted as one of the reasons for the poor financial results, and a re-org happened soon after that resulted in some people being laid off.

To be clear, we were doing well financially during covid and the work from home times. The current struggles with my company financially have nothing to do with work from home, it was external factors that every company in my industry is facing. The mandated return to office had nothing to do with productivity loss.
