So Neon wins the Palme again. Expect this to be their main Oscar contender. At least they didn’t do the annoying thing they did last year which was buy everything that might have a chance to win the Palme.
The Black Ball (La Bola Negra) was a breakout hit. The queer WW2 film did so well most people thought it would win the Palme. Netflix acquired it for 5M. Considering they delayed Narnia to next year I expect this to be their main Oscar contender (The Adventures of Cliff Booth was never gonna be an Oscar thing). My man Ruimy called it a Weinstein era Oscar bait type of film which really appealed to me since I love those 00s eras of films like Finding Neverland.
The only other film I was aware of was Lukas Dhont’s Coward, Dhont was previously at Cannes with Close which nearly won the Palme (it went to Triangle of Sadness that year). Mubi acquired this film and it won the actor award.
Mungiu‘s winning film from 2007 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days was great so curious to see what made him win again almost 20 years later. If it is anything like his other films it will be something bleak and depressive and with overtones of political criticism of Western Europe.
Yeah that’s about what I’ve heard of Fjord lol
