The screenwriter of some of the most enduringly satisfying films of the 1960's - 1980's has died. Goldman's adept pacing, dialogue, and characterization made him a rare talent during an era when formulaic comedies were the rule, and musicals were dying out. The films he wrote had self-aware, gently subversive qualities that created new standards for the portrayal of anti-heroes as leads in mainstream Hollywood films, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was the archetypical "buddy" movie.
Goldman's The Princess Bride remains on the short list of films I can't stop watching if I stumble on it.
His writing credits are pretty damn impressive:

Ditto. The Princess Bride is easily the movie I have watched the most times over the years.
