"Eternal Sunshine" came out a few days after I experienced my first big breakup from a serious relationship. My friend worked at the movie theater and knew I was down, so she invited me to the staff-only viewing they used to do on Thursday nights before new movies opened the next day. They had chosen Eternal Sunshine as the movie and fuck, what a time to see that movie. It reminds you that even though things go sour, they started out sweet, and that that sweetness is worth even a bad end. Very cathartic to watch at that moment.

I'm glad they did not go with Kaufman's original ending because the last scene is so good and sums up everything so well. I don't actually view the ending as a "happy" one though, because even they admit that their relationship is probably going to go to shit again...

It's really a great movie and one of my favs, so if you haven't seen it yet I would highly recommend doing so. It's on Netflix in quite a few countries (US and Canada included) as well:...

Jim Carey does a really fantastic job and plays it completely straight... none of his typical zany crap. Think Truman Show, not Ace Ventura.
