IMO good horror scenes will have:
Nice dark shadows (not brightly lit like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark)
No music accompanying the character in tense situations
An editor who respects the audience's patience
Camera shots that are near/around the character's POV (not zooming in on the monster's face when it's 20+ feet away from a character)
Minimal/subtle CGI
This movie seems to have indie-movie coloring, brightly lit outdoor night scenes, and CW-level CGI. My expectations have been lowered.
...still gonna watch it opening weekend though 'cause I'll eat up whatever goddamn horror is put in front of my face.
I think brightly lit horror can be a bold and extremely effective choice, but yeah if you're going to do night scenes, it's not the best idea to shoot in a well lit environment and just put a blue...

I really like a lot of Mike Flanagan's work, but I wish every one of his movies/shows weren't color graded like flat old photographs.
