While the two formats are very different, they both create an environment that feels very much the same.

I would say that 12 Monkeys feels a little more coherent in its storytelling, but towards the end of the movie that thesis could be challenged. Overall, time travel is a trope that can be abused in movies, and those two do a good job of keeping its mysteries elusive.

I think the movie is mainly about memory (that's pretty explicit in Sans Soleil that he is obsessed by it), and that time travel is just a plot device to explore the subject. You can even think that the guy is actually not time travelling at all but just dreaming/hallucinating.

That’s an interesting interpretation that I would like to believe. Given that memories are the only way for us to experience the past, and imagination is our attempt to experience the future....

We’re trapped in the ever-changing present, and our minds are our only escape from reality in a way. I highly suggest Mr. Nobody if you haven’t seen it. It takes this concept a step further and runs through alternate timelines based on decisions we could have reconsidered.

I saw this in a class at film school. Just to give an idea of its importance.
