Fresh Album Fridays: Sigur Ros, Queens of the Stone Age, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, and more

Good morning. This is a thread to discuss new album releases arriving at our doorsteps today. I'll start with some big names

Sigur Ros - ÁTTA

(Ambient, Modern Classical)
Spotify

A surprise release! I believe this is the first album with all three Sigur Ros members since Valtari in 2012. Initial reponse seems positive but mixed, should be worth checking out for fans

Queens of the Stone Age - In Times New Roman...

(Alt Rock, Hard Rock)
Bandcamp

Been a short while since the last QOTSA release. Initial reponse to this one seems very positive.

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation

(Metal, Prog Metal)
Bandcamp / Tildes Discusson

King Gizzard on a roll and don't seem to be stopping. Looks like this one is a move to a more metal sound. Could be the album of the week.

Killer Mike - MICHAEL

(Hip Hop, Concscious Hip Hop)
Bandcamp

First album away from Run The Jewels since 'R.A.P. Music' in 2012. Mike is a hip hop heavyweight at this point. Initital impressions look mixed.

Gunna - A Gift & a Curse

(Hip Hop, Trap)
Spotify

The first post Young Thug RICO trial from Gunna. First impressions seem mixed.

Feel free to share more releases below.

Discussion Points

Have you listened to any of these releases?
What are your thoughts?
What are you looking forward to listen to?
What have you enjoyed from these artists in the past?

Why Friday?

Most (but not all) new music releases on a Friday, as labels want to give the the release a full week of sales before entering the charts.

~~ Any feedback on the format welcome!

    Just now listened to ÁTTA.

    What are your thoughts?

It lacks their earlier fire and creativity. It's still good, but it's not amazing. They're basically taking the Sufjan route now: making decent music but nothing to write home about. They've got an amazing catalog already and are now just coasting on inertia, just paying the bills. I mean, people get old. It happens.

What have you enjoyed from these artists in the past?

I've listened to Sigur Rós' studio discography from beginning to end, and I own several of their albums in physical format. Ágætis byrjun is definitely my favorite among their albums, but that's probably not a surprising pick. Most fans would probably go with this one or Takk.... Ágætis byrjun is a beacon and a buoy, and you, in the dark yet glimmering waters, are invited to swim around it, explore it, enjoy it, and immerse yourself in its ocean. This album is the elf who stares back at you through your own eyes when you look in the mirror late at night, when you need sleep but cannot find it. This album is an airstrike on the finest day you've ever seen.

Moving on to Takk..., Every time I listen to this album, I love it more. This is a unique band for me, since I often sing along with them, having no idea what I'm singing. It's all phonetic anyway, but the fact that they can anchor the vocals in my mind without providing any meaning allows me to consider the vocals to be just another instrument in their triumphant, uplifting soundscape. This beautiful album can evoke emotions from me like few other pieces of music can. I went over to my friend's apartment one day, and he sat me down in front of his huge speakers, turned off the lights, and played for me a song. I didn't know who it was by. He just wanted me to listen to it. So I did. Full disclosure: he had kick-ass speakers, so anything would've sounded impressive. Listening to this song was like entering a faerie land, and not the cartoonish Disney kind. I mean the proper faerie realm, one supremely pagan and one that is equal parts beautiful and dangerous. That song was "Sæglópur", and it was the beginning of my love affair with Sigur Rós' music.

Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust is a delightful, beautiful blend of dream pop and post-rock, never failing to transport me to that aforementioned Faerie. To steal someone else's analogy of this band, this album is more selkie than troll. She swims through this music. This is a pleasant day at the festival where you browse the stalls and eat lunch upon the warm grass. The music unfolds all around you, revealing whatever vistas your imagination can conjure. Music so fragile it will break if you but brush against it, music so robust it will sweep you away in a tempest.

I listened to Kveikur when it was first released (2013), and having lost one of its members, the band sounds a bit different on this album. My initial reaction was one of guarded skepticism. I wasn't sure if I liked it, but when I listened to it again, it just happened to be when I was pulling an all-nighter (and no I wasn't studying). I danced to this album harder than I've ever danced in my life outside a live show setting, and the dancing helped me understand and love this album. As a matter of fact, my experience with this album was so profound that I didn't listen to a single piece of music for the next 30 days. I couldn't. The music receptors in my soul were burned out.

More ambient than their other releases, Valtari is more about setting a mood than taking a musical journey through Sigur Rós' soundscape. Though I don't spin this as much as Ágætis byrjun, Takk..., Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, or Kveikur, I still love this album and the way it helps me relax. This music is a long, slow, sad look at what the band is capable of. It's like a camera panning over an old battlefield, now overgrown with grass and flowers.

All the calm, soothing parts of Sigur Rós' shtick is on ( ), an ethereal, untitled album. Very entr'acte. The arras never rises. There are actually a couple moments where the organ-driven music sounds like something Pink Floyd would have made. But the moments quickly evaporate. For the most part, this album is mood crafting.

I'll always have a soft spot for ( ) and Untitled #8 in particular for being my introduction into post-rock.

Really appreciate you sharing this! That's a lovely story about Takk - it really is a gorgeous album. I happened to listen to it quite recently, first time in many years. I always dismissed it as a little bit too easy-to-swallow for a Sigur Ros album, but I think I've softened with age a little bit and completely fell in love with it again.

I used to always listen to Valtari while walking on my way to the exam hall to calm my nerves. I remember it gradually enforcing itself as my favourite in their discography at the time, but I haven't listened to it since.

Wondering if it might work better to post albums as comments instead? That way each album has a thread for discussion, interest in albums can be marked by votes, and allows other users to post albums that I overlooked. I might try that next week.

Single thread + comments per release is cool as long as ~music stays a single monolith.

True - I'm more hesitant now. More popular releases (among those on Tildes) often get their own thread, which I would want to encourage. I've linked to your King Gizzard post, and will keep an eye...

really like the idea of albums as comments, partially because it might help prevent burnout from your end (or just having a busy week), while centering discussions more logically.

    Re: Michael

i like the sound, i think somewhere Killer Mike has found a stride he didn't have before. Some sort of maturity, being more comfortable with his own voice as its own thing. Growth from R.A.P. plus independence from RTJ seems to be quite nice. features were also quite good. that being said there's nothing truly blowing me away. it's not necessarily a mediocre album by any means, as production is good, everything meshes quite well, but there's nothing quite standing out. the tracks bleed into one another in an almost meandering way, and i'm not convinced there's truly any replay value to this album.

that being said i wouldn't discourage anyone from listening to it.

small caveat might be that i was listening to this album on a few hours of sleep, so i mindset might've played a role here.

Just listened to both Michael and R.A.P. and I agree with everything here. There's a real urgency to R.A.P. that's totally lost on Michael, but at the same time Mike seems to have settled or matured into his voice. I think he was really fighting for relevancy on R.A.P., but he can rest on his laurels after being rocketed into success because of it.

That said, I'm still surprised Michael is getting such a tepid response. He's built a following on RTJ that's since turned their back on his politics, and probably doesn't have much interest in the Southern Hip Hop origins he's built from. He's now in a bit of a purgatory without El-P also at the helm.

He's now in a bit of a purgatory without El-P also at the helm.

his sound in both R.A.P. and everything with RTJ was his sound with El-P. in some ways taking a break from working with El-P feels like taking a break from who he was in the last decade or so. maturing, settling, but also a real divorce from what he was before this. i think that's why, for fans, it incites a tepid response. it's maybe too different?

as for his politics, those are tricky, hahah. in some songs he'll talk about killing your masters, reading Bakunin, which are frankly some of the most radical lefty lyrics you'll find in anything remotely mainstream. but then he's done interviews where he makes it sound like the solution to corruption, capitalism, and power struggles is just to have other people be in power. of course i can't see into his head but this weird split means he gets hate from anarchist/post-left people for being too neoliberal, and from democrat (up to bernie supporters) for being too lefty.

all that to say that i think he's inherently someone that people might struggle to classify, and that's a little how this album felt to me too. although what makes me not-super-stoked about that is that it doesn't feel as much "hard to classify" as it does unsure of what it is. i think.
