Been going on a little nostalgic trip back to the bands and albums that got me hooked on death metal about 20 years ago. Nile, Deicide, Dying Fetus and Death. In Their Darkened Shrines by Nile has a very special place for me with its unique mix of brutal technical death with an Egyptian theme on top. Favorite track is Unas Slayer of the Gods
Been a fairly typical week music-wise for me. R.E.M, Belle and Sebastian and Crawlers (who are brilliant and releasing their debut album in February, check them out!) are topping the artist list which is pretty standard.
I will recommend Half Man Half Biscuit, who combine sardonic lyrics with driving guitar riffs to create incredibly good (and funny) songs, and have been doing so for almost forty years!
Nice! I like Half Man Half Biscuit. Great recommendation
I've been on a weird kick lately, mostly 80s and 90s metal and industrial.
This week has been early Ozzy albums, a lot of tool, and Gravity Kills (link takes you to their MTV release to one of their tracks).
A mixture of some of the early 90s testament albums as well. I enjoyed this album from this brand new band called "Eradikated" which sounds a lot like Testament and other 80s style metal bands such as Judas Priest, or Motley Crue, I've been listening to quite a bit of them as well the last few weeks.
Been anticipating Wolf & Bear's newest release Bloodletter and it didn't disappoint! I'm still heartbroken over their bassist Tim Feerick's passing, but they didn't miss a beat. They're honoring him well with this newest release. I'm a big fan of POOFY and THERE'S NO DUST IN THE CITY. The latter especially since it's Feerick's send-off song. It was cool seeing Andrew Wells feature since he's the second guitarist and backup vocalist (third vocalist?) of Dance Gavin Dance, a band that Feerick also played bass for. The whole album is great and I love the bass work and the vocals.
Dance Gavin Dance put out their newest single War Machine and DAMN does it go hard. Mess absolutely kills it on this track, I think this is the heaviest I've heard from them. Jon's part before the bridge is insane. Love Tilian's and Andrew's vocals as well but this is 100% Jon's song.
Came across this cool group from Thailand The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band, they have a very funky psychedelic sound.
Here are a few songs that I really liked this week:
reminds me of Cowboy Bebop Space Lion:
reminds me of Penguin Cafe Orchestra:
This song is also nice: https://toddrundgren.bandcamp.com/track/a-beautiful-song I found it right now while trying to make sure that Todd Rundgren wasn't part of Penguin Cafe Orchestra so that my comparison was not foolish
In the car: Dire Straights, Donald Fagan, Elvis Costello and Front 242. All in alphabetical order off a little USB stick that is plugged into the dashboard
My son drives a car with a broken CD and tape so he only listens to "classic rock" on FM radio so when he picked me up it was Gold Dust Woman by Fleetwood Mac. We play the game of guessing the next song.
I’m absolutely stuck on Jeff Rosenstock’s evolving sound. He’s traditionally been a sort of sad sack Indy rock guy, which was cool, but niche. However he just dropped a new album, Hellmode, and he consistently hits some of the best work of his career. If I had to compare what he’s doing now, it sounds like a bit of a cross between Third Eye Blind, Radiohead, the Airborne Toxic Event, and Pennywise, all without losing his characteristic witty and self effacing lyrical tone. Highly recommended.
Been exploring some free jazz and I have to say it really clicked for me, in the past I've liked some but it wasn't really my main jam but last couple of days I can't get enough. Mainly just listening to the big early albums, but the one that has connected with me the most is Cecil Taylor's Unit Structures. This album explores a ton of different places sonically and they all paint such vivid pictures for me. Beautiful album, would highly recommend. John Coltrane's Ascension is an album I had bounced off previously, even though I love A Love Supreme, but it really worked for me this time. I just love how all the different instruments can create this cacophony that somehow comes together into a unified soundscape. Really excited to explore more.
Spiritbox - The Fear Of Fear (2023)
This EP just came out. I made a whole post about it, but Courtney LePlante is one of the best metalcore vocalists around right now doing both "sings and screams." Highly recommend this EP.

My usual commute setup of hundreds-of-albums-on-shuffle (often indie/pop/shoegaze in the mornings and metal in the evenings and rap whenever I'm in the mood), some Killer Mike and RTJ, Ren, Aurora, a grind/powerviolence band called Closet Witch... sampling a bunch of new and recommended music as always
Ooh Closet Witch is fun, thanks for that! Hadn’t heard of them.
Pharoah Sanders's debut album Tauhid never fails to captivate me - I've listened to it twice this week.
