As one half of Outkast, he helped invent southern hip-hop, sold 20m records and won six Grammys. Now André 3000 has released a solo flute album.

Andre 3000 is one of the few arts people who I respect less for the art they produce and more for the way they live their lives. When it comes to popular art, the key to commercial success is to keep on making more things that are very simelar to eachother. With Outkast, A3K was on the top, and he could have very easily coasted through his life producing more music like that. And Outkast had so much style and variation in their songs that he'd still have a lot of creative freedom within the restraints of pop music. But the man has this very pure love of music and pursued it even as it took him to strange places, regardless of the kinds of success he would reap from it.

I know that I tend to have fairly peculiar tastes when it comes to the arts. And I think a part of that is that I occasionally find an appeal in art that is unappealing. There are times when I will see something that looks terrible or listen to a very abrasive song over and over because it's clear to see that there was a lot of work and care put into it. The artists who make them know that they are unappealing, but they have something in them that drives them to make it anyways. That pursuit of their something is beauty in and of itself.

I recall Andre being involved in Class of 3000, a cartoon in which he was a music teacher. So I believe he has a grasp of many musical types... I'm interested to listen to this.

EDIT: Having given it a listen, it's very pleasant and mellow. I played it while my infant daughter napped on my chest. The track titles made me smile, some made me think. Cool stuff.
