Thanks to @0x29A, I went and picked up Woods of Ypres - Pursuit of the Sun & Allure of the Earth. Years back I had tried listening to Woods of Ypres, and I believe it was the song "I Was Buried in Mt Pleasant Cemetary". It didn't click for me so I disregarded the band entirely. But after the endorsement the other week I listened to this, their first full-length, and I enjoyed it enough to go and order it. In reading reviews, a lot of people have disparaged the clean vocals, but for me they're reminiscent of the clean vocals of Novembre who happen to be one of my top bands. The music harkens to Agalloch and the combination is amazing.

Otherwise, this week I've had Mindless Self Indulgence's "Shut Me Up" living rent-free in my head. My friends were obsessed with this band back in the late 90s/early 00s but I, as a grim kvlt metalhead, disregarded them entirely. Youtube's algorithm put this song on my feed and I've been grooving on it ever since, even though "electropunk" is far away from my typical niche.

Thanks for the mention, glad to hear this :) I definitely can see the clean vocals not working for some listeners, or at least, requiring a deep dive to appreciate- but I love them. Definitely a doom feel to them. To me, there's just really something especially genuine emanating from David Gold's vocals, both cleans and harshes, that just sits so well with their music. One of the rare vocalists for me where instead of it simply being a stylistic choice- I feel like the genuine emotion is coming through in the sound itself, regardless of lyrics. I also might be biased because Woods albums got me through some tough mental health times in my life, so I could hear myself in his voice too.

While Mindless Self Indulgence has never clicked for me, I definitely am familiar with disregarding music for a long time, only to come around and enjoy it- it's happened for me with all sorts of specific artists in genres that are outside my norm (pop, country, etc) and plenty in the genres I frequent (metal, indie, etc) too. I am so much more open now to all types/forms of artists/music than I ever used to be- and I'm so glad for that.

I recently discovered Melanie Martinez again. I've been really really enjoying her newest album Portals. LIGHT SHOWER & SPIDER WEB specifically are amazing.

Plumtree - Scott Pilgrim (I've liked you for a thousand years) It's about a minute too long, but i love this relatively stripped back poppy grunge bass heavy song.

Barking-mad gravedigger metal, the kind of jazz made by vampires who've watched generations pass away, all their earthly glories leading only to the death and decomposition. Real Ozymandias-core shit, this. Listen to this, and you might finally understand Ecclesiastes.
