During the pandemic, I listened to a song called Armadillo by Balming Tiger, a South Korean musical collective. While I had that song in my "Liked Songs" playlist, I kinda forgot about the song and the group. Fast forward to this past week and I've rediscovered Balming Tiger and man they have grown. Just been listening to some of their more popular songs this week.

    • Sexy Nukim (섹시느낌)

    • Buriburi

    • SOS

    • Armadillo

Buriburi is probably my most played song this week. Just so catchy. They actually appeared on Stephen Colbert earlier this year to perform that song! Sexy Nukim is pretty good too, and unsurprisingly it's their most popular song. Having RM from BTS really gave them a big boost.

Definitely recommend y'all check out Balming Tiger. They're an interesting group. Their main focus is alternative hip-hop and probably the closest you can get to a South Korean Brockhampton or JPEGMafia.

    BADBADNOTGOOD released three EPs recently

These have been on loop. BADBADNOTGOOD does a lot of collaborations, but these three EPs are back to their roots, in a way... without Matthew Tavares, which is still sad.

Not quite the same but if you haven't checked out OMA, they're fun but do more straight covers of hip hop songs. At the same time they're also the live band for Isaiah Rashad so they definitely have chops but don't go as far as say reinterpreting songs the way BBNG reinterpreted Gucci Mane's "Lemonade" or collaborating directly with people like Tyler the Creator. Still it's fun music to have in the background if you want something more relaxed while doing other things.

    tl;dr:

    • Blackwater Fever
    • the New Mastersounds
    • the Heavy
    • Portishead/Sneaker Pimps/Massive Attack
    • Wax Tailor/Nightmares on Wax (waxiness unintended)
    • Dandy Warhols
    • Yeah Yeah Yeahs
    • Led Zeppelin

I recently discovered (well, I was recently told about) Blackwater Fever and the New Mastersounds. Nothing actually new, but new to me.

Listened to almost the first three albums of the Heavy on my drive home yesterday.

Also been going back to some trip hop with Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, Massive Attack, and Wax Tailor (I wouldn't really call Wax Tailor trip hop, but that's how I found him. Which also was around the time of Nightmares on Wax).

I have a long commute during the week, so I try to keep things chill or "zoned". On my up-and-coming list are the Dandy Warhols, Yeah Yeah Yeahs (though both of those bands I tend to start and either they can't hold me through the traffic, or I just zone out too much), and Led Zeppelin. We'll see how things go, or if I opt for podcasts.

I've mostly been enjoying Vampire Weekend's new album since it came out these day, it's called Only God Was Above Us

Have been listening to Billie Eilish, Terminal Nation, Korn, Disrupt, Lacking, and plenty of other stuff. All over the map. Aside from that, recommendations for stuff released last week (and a bonus) are as follows:

    Non-metal

    The Marias - Submarine
Crisp indie pop/rock with jazz and soul influence. Horns, percussion, and plenty of treats to keep it interesting. Lyrics in both English and Spanish.

Metal (primarily clean-ish / non-scream vocals or instrumental)

    none this week

    Metal (primarily harsh vocals)

Adversarial - Solitude with the Eternal
Sharp, nihilist, vicious, black/death metal from Toronto. Absolute whirlwinds of sound. A great follow-up to their 2015 release. A nine year gap has not hurt them at all. Some dissonant leads and chords, screams of despair. Layered death metal vocals. Probably my favorite of the week.

    Hellbutcher - Selftitled
Swedish black/thrash. Thrashy, goblin-y vocals. Tons of energy and speed here. Great guitar melodies. One of the better releases of this genre in recent years.

    Thou - Umbilical
Sludgy NOLA doom. Almost like Zao mixed with sludge. Thou have been around a while and put out many releases at this point. This latest one turns the production far more noisy and angry. They've released plenty of fine music but A/B listening to this against the rest of their catalog- almost makes the prior stuff sound too produced and weak- it's just that much of a step up in acidic, forceful sound.

Whoredom Rife - Den Vrede Makt
Occult, sinister Norwegian black metal. Big, majestic, melancholic sound. Destructive and despairing all in one.

Parfaxitas - Weaver of the Black Moon
Another sinister occult black metal act. This one leans a much darker direction. Evil, dissonant, tense instrumentation and demonic vocals.

    Wormwood - The Star
Black metal crossed with folk metal and rock. Can hear their black-n'-roll roots. Has very somber, quiet acoustic moments. At other times, atmospheric, almost-but-not-quite-post-black-metal sounds. Plenty of aggressive black metal too. I think their label forgot to unlock/release the album fully on the bandcamp link, so you can check out a YT stream here

    Árstíðir lífsins - Aldrlok
Icelandic pagan/folk black metal. Cold, historical, folk-leaning atmosphere. 'Aldrlok' is sung entirely in Old Norse-Icelandic and contains lyrics with heavy use of Skaldic and Eddic poetry. Chants, spoken word moments, typical black metal vocals, and emotive guitar riffs that give a very desolate and nature-bound backdrop for everything that is happening. Beautiful.

Bonus Record (can be any genre from any time, simply a recommendation)

    Mitochondrion - Parasignosis
Extremely dark, occult death metal. Very chaotic. Plenty of dark ambient droning sounds, dissonant guitar leads, extremely fast ritualistic guitar/drum sections. Unrelenting, claustrophobic, and otherworldly.
