Nice, thanks for sharing! I’m surprised I’ve never run into this group, I’m always on the lookout for solid black metal, especially when I can confirm it’s definitely not NSBM. While it’s coming from a different direction of “Americana” broadly speaking, wanted to mention Blackbraid in case you weren’t already aware of him. Native American Black Metal, really enjoy his work!
There is actually a decent small scene coming from all across the Americas. Blackbraid is the most "palatable", I'd say, and definitely my first pick when it comes to showing people, but there are...
There is actually a decent small scene coming from all across the Americas. Blackbraid is the most "palatable", I'd say, and definitely my first pick when it comes to showing people, but there are others, like Ifernach, Pan-Amerikan Native Front or Nechochwen.
However, as it's black metal, it's always filigraned by the eternal question of "is it sketch?", and the answer is sometimes yes, even in this case. If you're looking for squeaky clean riffs, being from a native band doesn't actually tell much of anything in that regard.
I think that how native politics are at play in extreme metal could deserve its own separate discussion (and might also be a tad too niche), but I don't want to hijack too much either, so I'll leave it at that.

Yeah it gets complicated. There are indigenous black metal bands that somehow get caught up in NS (National Socialist / Nazi) ideology, and Ifernach is one of those. Its sole member is in and has been in multiple NSBM projects (Aufnorden, Maeströ Cröque Mört).
Even Blackbraid, whose main dude is not sketchy and has vocally said some anti-nazi stuff, has a live guitarist that's not so clean.
All depends on where each listener wants to draw their own line. Black metal, and honestly, metal in general (and tbf other genres also experience this but maybe not on the same scale) is a complex web of scenes and band members that are varying degrees of sketchy and not sketchy- live members, studio guests, actual members, etc.
As someone that discovers tons of metal on a regular basis- I often start my research of bands sketchiness at Encyclopedia Metallum

American Gothic Black Metal. I can't believe this perfect blend exists. Truly what makes music exciting!
LYRICS:
A blight on the horizon
The neighing mare looks to the ground
A passing cloud like passing time
The shadows far and wide
There!
Beyond the reaches
I see the coming storm
I know not where
I can find shelter
Or sense of home to be at peace
All I was seems to slip away
Into nothing
All I want is a place to call home
Sing your story
The song of trodden men
For all to see
For those who held your name
No saviors no glory
A last shred of valor left
We are the lone
The lost men on the plains
Rider, rider
Who are you running from
What is your name worth to you
And what you’ve done?
Carve out your name Before time can forget Across the sky
A bitter history
Carry your shame
Your deeds can’t be undone
We are the lost
The sons of nameless graves
Oh lonesome rider
Lay down your guns
This world has left you behind
Time has won
Just one of endless sons of the frontier
The time has passed me by
Only one hope left to cling to
To enter my house justified
All those who bore
Who bore my name
Will live and end
Will end the same
The paths we walk reach far and wide
The paths we tread on which we’ll die
The paths will never forgive me
Or trade the future for a dream

Probably my favourite metal album from last year! It feels like on this one Wayfarer got the balance just perfect in their weaving together of all the different sonic and thematic elements they'd been reaching for. The resulting blend makes for such a uniquely compelling atmosphere that masterfully avoids ever succumbing to novelty.
I was lucky enough to catch them live with Enslaved earlier in the year and happy to say their sound translates well to the stage - definitely check them out given the chance.

Yeah to be honest, after subsequent listens of "American Gothic," the songs kind of blend together. The longer songs FEEL long (this is coming from someone who enjoys prog). I think they could make the different sections more interesting and memorable. The western sound could also maybe benefit from different instruments like banjo, fiddle, harmonica, also using slide guitar for example. I liked the old timey piano in "False Constellations." But mainly I just appreciate a decent attempt of a country/metal mashup. :)
I've heard the name Wayfarer thrown around but never actually listened to anything by them and wow! This was a treat. I especially like the cleanliness of the harsh vocals? If that makes sense...

Edit: added a link to Blackbraid's YouTube page
Thanks for the link! I'll have a listen sometime. Native American Black Metal are not words I've ever seen strung together! Haha.

That’s exactly what piqued my curiosity the first time I read about them lol. Hope you enjoy!

I listened to it quite a bit when it came out, it's catchy but I got bored of it relatively quickly. It's fresh and solid but not amazing.
