Hey, thanks for the recommendations. Now Wintersun I've heard of, might've listened to a song or two. I'll do some research on which albums to start with. Don't think I've listened to any Icelandic metal - I've just never come across any bands somehow - so I'm very curious to check it out!

I'm visiting Iceland and have been playing tons of European metal - melodeath mainly. Recently, I was trying out a Spotify user playlist when Ensiferum came on. They're a Finnish folk metal band and are super skilled and awesome! So now I'm attempting to listen to their discography in order. Should be a lot of fun.

Oh and I discovered Ghoultown! I think the description from Sputnik Music says a lot: "Picture a cross between George Romero, Clint Eastwood, and Johnny Cash." I think anyone could put on "Drink with the Living Dead" and get a kick out of it. :D

Yeah to be honest, after subsequent listens of "American Gothic," the songs kind of blend together. The longer songs FEEL long (this is coming from someone who enjoys prog). I think they could make the different sections more interesting and memorable. The western sound could also maybe benefit from different instruments like banjo, fiddle, harmonica, also using slide guitar for example. I liked the old timey piano in "False Constellations." But mainly I just appreciate a decent attempt of a country/metal mashup. :)

American Gothic Black Metal. I can't believe this perfect blend exists. Truly what makes music exciting!

    LYRICS:

    A blight on the horizon
The neighing mare looks to the ground
A passing cloud like passing time
    The shadows far and wide

    There!
    Beyond the reaches
    I see the coming storm
    I know not where
    I can find shelter
Or sense of home to be at peace
All I was seems to slip away
    Into nothing
All I want is a place to call home

    Sing your story
    The song of trodden men
    For all to see
For those who held your name
    No saviors no glory

A last shred of valor left
    We are the lone
The lost men on the plains

    Rider, rider
    Who are you running from
What is your name worth to you
    And what you’ve done?

Carve out your name Before time can forget Across the sky
    A bitter history
    Carry your shame
    Your deeds can’t be undone
    We are the lost
    The sons of nameless graves

    Oh lonesome rider
    Lay down your guns
This world has left you behind
    Time has won

Just one of endless sons of the frontier
The time has passed me by
Only one hope left to cling to
    To enter my house justified

    All those who bore
    Who bore my name
    Will live and end
    Will end the same

The paths we walk reach far and wide
The paths we tread on which we’ll die
The paths will never forgive me
Or trade the future for a dream

Next concerts I've got lined up are The Decemberists, Weezer's "Blue Album" 30th anniversary tour along with Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr., and finally Opeth in October for their upcoming North American tour. I've only seen Weezer out of these, so everyone else will be a surprise!

Welp. I blame TikTok for exposing what's considered "extremely spicy" foods to people who don't regularly eat spicy food and have no business eating something at that level. You gotta build up a tolerance to capsaicin. It's like caffeine. Some people are sensitive and become really affected. Like I wouldn't go and pound a bunch of energy drinks, or even worse let's say RedBull and vodkas, because I obviously know that'd be bad for my health.

Also using the term "poison" seems wild considering all the cuisines out there known for their high spice levels...

    You're not alone!

Another thing I want to add: It takes a lot for me to comment. I have to feel strongly about the topic and/or I want to add something that hasn't been said and/or I happen to be in a particularly good and positive mood. Add the anxiety on top of that. So then commenting becomes a bigger deal than for your average person.

It's like... I'm commenting DESPITE my anxiety, because I feel that it will be a net positive (maybe positive for others or positive for myself to feel heard). Even seeing a reply in my inbox makes me anxious (maybe I said something wrong? Maybe I sounded stupid? Maybe this person purposefully misconstrued? Maybe this person wants to argue? Etc.). If a particular reply or conversation goes badly, I tend to ruminate on it and it ends up affecting my day. So sometimes I figure I'll save myself the mental stress and just forgo reading them. Sometimes I purposefully avoid logging into the account or I'll avoid my inbox and maybe check a few days later when I feel like it.

I don't do that too often though. But I admit sometimes I do, and that's the reasoning.

So I've been titrating up on a medication that needs to be taken with food to prevent nausea. Currently I'm on the highest dose yet. Well lo and behold I'm on vacation in another country, dining at a fancy white tablecloth restaurant. I start feeling SO queasy after taking my medication, to the point where I had to excuse myself and go throw up in the bathroom. Then of course the sink plumbing wasn't great (stupid me), I couldn't fix it, and ended up telling a staff member when I exited. My waiter was probably confused though because I didn't eat much. Probably thought I didn't like the food or have an eating disorder. So now there's another cringey memory for me to dwell on lol. Embarrassing!

Well I'm an animal person, so... You gotta see the pupfish! They're endangered and live in these super crazy desert conditions. Very cool to see them so playful and lively, swimming around in such little water. Also, visit the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refugee if you can (maybe an hour or so away from Death Valley) where you can see the Devils Hole pupfish. They are critically endangered, live exclusively in this spring-fed cave on a sort of shelf, and only a few hundred in population. Very precious!

I've been doing night shifts since the start of my career. For me, it's really just about managing my sleep, making sure I wake up as late as possible before the shift starts. The alertness takes care of itself. I always show up to work fresh lol.

Most of the time, it's easier on the body to find a schedule and stick to it, don't flip flop. But if you're 2 days on, 5 days off, I'd totally flip my schedule. Let's say it's the end of my work week and I just got off work. I'll stay up and power through. Or take a short nap (set an alarm) if that would help. That way I'm back on the normal day time schedule by the next day.

Other than that, blackout curtains is a must. If I'm moving from place to place and only staying in the area short-term, I'll put up the disposable blackout shades from Home Depot. White noise helps too (turning on the fan, the AC), or listening to rain sounds, waves, etc.

And I wanted to know WHY on earth these crazy films were made. So, even though I doubt I would ever watch it, thank you for the interesting insight on Salò. :)
