Let's collect some good music discussion prompts.

As you've probably noticed, ~music is kind of dead compared to a lot of the other tildes. There's been a grand total of 3 posts that have gone over 10 upvotes in the past week. I'd like to try and change that.

The purpose of this thread is to collect interesting music discussion prompts. Don't worry about if it's a super high quality prompt or not, this is just brainstorming. If you ever notice that there hasn't been a decent discussion for a while and you don't have any ideas of what to post, go ahead and grab a prompt from here that hasn't been posted yet and post it. Try to start off the discussion with your own thoughts on the prompt if you can!

Also, we should try and keep any responses to the prompts themselves out of this thread — it'd defeat the point if we have all the discussion here :)

Or something like just pick an album and then ask if I like this album what else would I like. Or just most influential artist or album of certain time period. Or ask what the top 5 albums of a certain time period was and at the end of the thread put a list up of the top five most mentioned albums in Order of mentions.

Yeah, time periods are a great starting point. Even more so if you limit it to one specific genre or social scene within that time period. I think it might be almost too broad to say "what's the best album of the 90's" when there's so much music to choose from!

Well yeah, I was just giving you a jumping off point. Best alternative album of the 90s would be a good discussion.

What's your music workflow? i.e., what is the process in which you discover, listen to, and keep track of music?

How passionate are you about music. Is it just something you put on in the background, a trip into high school or college nostalgia, or are you actively engaged with various artists? Or something...

    • What are some of your favorite artists that not many other people you talk to know about? (hopefully ~music doesn't have r/music ideas and has enough sense to know that Pink Floyd, Radiohead, King Crimson, etc. don't really fall into this)
    • Do you tend to listen to albums or individual songs more? What about it makes you prefer one over the other? Do you do one thing for casual listening and another actively?
    • Concept albums? Love them? Hate them? Indifferent? Do they add anything for you?
    • Strangest record you've ever heard?
    • Skits in albums? Do they add anything for you? Are they just annoying?

edit: I think I said this on the first question that was discussing stuff we could do in ~music, but I remember saying something like organizing a weekly album discussion or something? And I think someone mentioned how r/listentothis or something did something like that and it would fit in here as well? Could be something that could be done here until potentially a bigger subgroup is made for it (if it needs to be made).

Oooh, these are all great. Thanks! I'd love to do a weekly album discussion. Maybe we could have one thread where we nominate albums, and then do a discussion thread on the winner?

One thread where people nominate an album with a short blurb or something, trying to make it look interesting to other people, then a followup discussion on whatever people choose. Hopefully people vote off of interest of the blurb or something instead of just going "hey that's an album I actually know."
