~music Listening Club 12 - Heart of My Own
Week 12! Here we've got this week's user-voted record: Heart of My Own by Basia Bulat!
Taken from @cfabbro's pitch:
I would like to nominate Heart Of My Own by Basia Bulat, a Polish-Canadian folk singer-songwriter. I absolutely adore her and think she is criminally underrated even here in Canada. Oddly enough, she did get a chance to do an NPR Tiny Desk Concert a number of years ago though, which was amazing.
The Youtube playlist for the album is a bit broken but both Spotify and Soundcloud have the whole thing:

Here's the place to discuss your thoughts on the record, your history with it or the artist, and basically talk about whatever you want to that goes along with Heart of My Own. Remember that this is intended to be a slow moving thing, feel free to take your time and comment at any point in the week!
If you'd like to stream or buy the album, it can be found on most platforms here.
Huzzah. I can't wait to see other peoples' opinions on the album! :)
edit: no takers? :(
The unknown albums are always gonna be a tough sell unless someone decides to start raving. Still, I think they're very valuable even if the participation tends to be less.
I'm listening to this one, at least!
Yeah that's understandable. I wasn't expecting a landslide of interest or anything but to have nobody seemingly interested was a bit disappointing to see. :( Thanks for listening to it though, and I look forward to seeing what you thought of it.
I love it! What do you think of her other albums? I see that the newer stuff is more indie pop-ish (not my thing), so I imagine the best place to go from here is Oh, My Darling?
I'm glad to hear you liked it! And yeah, she changed record labels a few years ago and they have her doing more pop stuff. It's a bit disappointing since I absolutely love her folk music but her pop stuff is actually still pretty good and as a career move it makes sense. Oh, My Darling is absolutely fantastic IMO, especially for a debut album, so if you want to stick to her more folkish music that's the next album I would recommend, but Tall Tall Shadow is a decent mix of folk and contemporary stuff. Good Advice is almost entirely pop though.
Just wanted to say I'll also be listening to this, but probably a little late. I meant to get to this yesterday or today but things kept coming up, I'm sorry!
No worries and thanks for making the effort. I look forward to hearing what you think of it.
Just got around to this, and it was pleasant! Not something I'll probably listen to much, but it was a fine listen for me. Her voice is great, and it was probably the driving thing that kept me listening throughout most of it. Not much I can say otherwise about the instrumentation or lyricism, but I was able to latch onto that pretty voice and let it carry me.
Love, love, love! I was a little worried for a moment because I'm a bit overly prone to hearing something and being unable to get the word "generic" out of my head, but this pleasantly surprised me. That word still applies, there are no boundaries being pushed here, but I think this fills that space in my brain that needs good folk music delivered with a very pleasant and varied voice.
I'm going to be listening to this for a while :) Definitely my favorite of the obscure week records so far!
Yeah, singer-songwriter style folk is rarely groundbreaking... it's more about the lyrics, vocal quality of the singer and execution, which Basia does pretty well, IMO. Thanks again for listening and I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
Anyway I can look at past weeks posts?
