Local artists thread
Let's mix things up a bit and talk about musicians and bands from our local areas. There's often some really great music happening in a local scene, which rarely sees the light of day. So hit us up with links to the music makers in your local scene (or your own band even!) so we can have a listen and maybe discover something new and amazing :)
Tranqua Lite - I Need One Leg For Balance
Some absolutely fantastic art rock. They're just mind blowing live, and I reckon they could get really big. I used to play with the drummer in a groove metal band, and he left to start Tranqua Lite... Definitely the right move I think: there's a lot more musicianship going on here than he would have got out of the music we were making together.
This is one of my old friends who's been making music since forever and finally seems to have found the right sound and expression. If anyone he deserves some attention it's him. According to themselves this is their music:
"4 Guys From The Future is a band exploring the emotional chaos of human life through hypnotic beats and oblique lyrics."

Sir Curse - Tarot
Shameless plug for my own band here. Alt rock with a gypsy vibe, and really theatrical presentation. It's fun music to get down and have a boogie to, which moments of dirty heaviness. We've been described as Kate Bash joining System of a Down and then all forming a circus together.
Random Hand - Anger Management
Absolutely fantastic ska punk band that have been going since I was under ten. They went on hiatus for a couple of years and made their comeback last year. Real high energy stuff, sometimes with quite an angry, protest (punk!) vibe. The singer is also the trombone player, and it's bonkers to watch. Bonus: I'm in this video!
Pulverise - Fooled You
Female fronted nu/rap metal. They're one of the happiest metal bands I know, I was playing gigs with them when they were still only a local band, but they're hitting up the national scene pretty hard now, and getting the recognition they deserve. They describe themselves as partycore, and having seen them live, that label is entirely accurate!
I've posted this as a topic here before, but my favorite local band is Secret of Boris, been friends with them for a long time. I think I came across them back when there were called LaME. a year or so after they started.
Secret of Boris - Don't Mention Love
Ithaca, NY is home to a really large number of awesome bands. The other day I was listening to Fall Creek Brass Band play downtown. We’ve also got Gunpoets (hip hop) and Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad (reggae). Actually, Ithaca has a huge reggae scene. And the X Ambassadors are from here, too!
And, shameless plug, for anyone who wants to learn more about their own local music scene, my old college research lab has been working on a recommender system for local music, localify.org. Currently doesn’t quite work on mobile, but check it out of your desktop if you’re interested! Just throw in your zip code and log in to Spotify to get some artists local to you that you might enjoy! Feel free to contact me with any questions or feedback.
My coworker has introduced me to some realllllly cool artists that he listens to,
Master Boot Record (aka MBR) creates Electronic Metal. Super awesome, I'm very into it right now.
In the same vein, I was introduced to GoST today. Also incredibly enjoyable, maybe not quite as metal focused but still loud and driving.
There are probably too many for me to mention, so instead I'll shout out an art/music/movie venue that's pretty close to me: Coaxial Arts. It's like...a punk version of the academic art scene. I've heard some cool music there and some...loud and noisy music (which I could be in to, but my old ears are sensitive and that stuff kills me live, now).
The biggest local band is probably Publiners, playing folk-inspired rock music I guess. Here's that time they tried to qualify for Eurovision.
These days they are a bit in the shadow of singer/songwriter Adrian Jørgensen, who is doing well in an ongoing singing competition. Here's that time he tried to qualify for Eurovision.
Wanted to ask before I do anything: can I link to non-local small bands? I'm really into folk, folk-punk, and emo revival so I know some bands with really small followings that aren't really local to me or my hometown but I would still say have "local band" sized followings
Go for it!
A really great but small group from Chicago is Iris Temple.
Lemonade - Iris Temple
