Songlink (song.link) has changed name to Odesli
People have been using song.link links on Tildes a lot as a way to effectively link to the same album/song on all the different streaming services.
It looks like, as of today, they've changed their name to "Odesli", and their site is now https://odesli.co.
This tweet is about the only information I can find so far, I don't know if there's anything more anywhere: https://twitter.com/songlink_/status/1183919368058499073
Huh, I found song.link very easy to remember. Not sure how Odesli will compare in that area
Seriously. I hate made-up words (or extremely rare words) for company names. It's so hard to remember a name if it's a word I've never heard before!
I'm not sure if anything is actually changing. The company appears to be changing the name, but I think the song.link, album.link etc urls will continue to work.
It'd be pretty criminal if they have these great urls and relegate them to being used for legacy purposes
Huh. I thought this was such a good idea that I bought read.link to try to make a similar service that would show options at local libraries and ebook lending services. (I haven’t even started on the engineering yet though.) Sounds like they might be moving into that space also, with “other creative industries”.
Not familiar with the site, but Songlink is definitely memorable while Odesli is not. Reminds me of the Buy.com > Rakuten rename. I can only guess they're trying to build more identity with a less generic name.
On a quick glance they appear to use affiliates for their outgoing links though, so I'll probably not use them myself.
The Rakuten situation is pretty different. Rakuten is massive in Japan, it's almost like their Amazon. They acquired Buy.com and renamed it, probably partially as a way of trying to get some brand recognition in North America too. They've acquired a lot all over the world and renamed multiple of them to their brand. For example Ebates was another huge (almost $1B) acquisition and http://www.ebates.com redirects you to Rakuten now as well.
Songlink wasn't acquired by anyone as far as I can tell, they're just renaming.
Was bound to happen. Unfortunately most FOSS projects and even startups don't do even a quick search through a trade mark database to check if their preferred name happens to be used by someone (in the same category) already.
