I don’t see much metal talk here on Tildes. For anyone looking for a good place to start with Iron Maiden, I highly recommend the documentary Iron Maiden: Flight 666. I don’t think people in a good chunk of the world understand just how massively popular they are (like, one of the biggest bands in the world popular).

Slightly broader, if you just want to know about metal in general, there same guys who directed Iron Maiden: Flight 666 also did a series called Metal Evolution that’s a good primer on metal in general - it’ll help you understand why this post is tagged “nwobhm”.

I second that recommendation - the documentary is really good, and the live show portion of the DVD is also excellent. I saw them on that tour (the only non-festival UK show they did for it!), and it was utterly incredible. Never thought I'd get to see them play classics such as Rime of the Ancient Mariner, or Heaven Can Wait.

Iron Maiden release their first single in 6 years! It's not quite a departure from their usual style, but it shows a bit of growth, which isn't a bad thing. The riff is very catchy and fun to play, and it's got that classic Iron Maiden single syndrome of the lyrics being completely nonsensical and the chorus just repeating the name of the song. Good times.

I do hope the album is better than this tune, but in my opinion they rarely pick the best songs on the albums to release as singles. I like it, but it's not quite what I expect from Iron Maiden.

Related: the viral ambiguous marketing campaign that they have been putting together for this release has been quite enjoyable, and very silly. Here's a good thread summarising the various hints that were dropped in the run up to this. If they continue to post tweaked album covers to Instagram it may mean that we have something else to look forward to on Monday!

Did you catch the crashed Ed Force One in the background at the beginning?

I do wonder how they'll approach Bruce's voice on the album. There were definite moments on the last one where you could tell he was struggling. The Great Unknown is the main example I think.

As long as they play into his strengths, I think they will be okay. The same thing happened with Rob Halford over the past 20 years and Priest just started adapting with their newer stuff....

Honestly, the only person I can think of who managed to keep their vocal range through their whole career is Geddy Lee.

Many years ago (mid-90s) I was in a band in Atlanta. We would often perform at the Masquerade Ballroom on the weekends. I remember one time looking in the newspaper (man, I'm old) to see who we'd be playing with on Friday, and Saturday night Iron Maiden was playing the same stage! It was cool to think that we were playing in the same venues as some of these popular acts. I think another weekend we played on Friday and then The Cure played on Saturday. Good times!
