Kevin McCarthy reportedly agreed to spending caps that would limit future aid to Ukraine as part of the deal with ultraconservatives that enabled him to finally be elected as House speaker on Saturday.

    ...

According to reports, to end the impasse, Mr McCarthy agreed a deal that the House would commit to passing bills that would cap all discretionary defence spending at 2022 financial year levels, meaning roughly $1.47 trillion. Congress has passed four emergency supplementals totalling more than $100 billion since Russia’s invasion in February.

    ...

“Haemorrhaging billions in taxpayer dollars for Ukraine while our country is in crisis is the definition of America last,” Mr Gaetz said last month as to why he had stood against Mr McCarthy.

    ...

Matt Rosendale of Montana, another holdout, recently voted against US support for Ukraine, citing what he said were more pressing security needs along the southern border with Mexico.

The anti-war Russians who have made Latin America their new home

While hundreds of thousands of these emigrants stayed relatively close, moving to countries like Georgia and Kazakhstan, hundreds of others went all the way to Latin America. Meduza spoke with emigrants in Ecuador, Argentina, Uruguay, and Costa Rica about their decision to move to the other side of the world, the difficulties they’ve encountered, and the freedoms they’ve experienced in their new homes.

The evening after mobilization was called, I'd been checking flights out of Russia that don't require a visa. The usual spots – Kazakhstan, Georgia, Mongolia, Armenia, Turkey – all popped up. But then, there was Mexico.

I'd never considered it an option: price aside, it's a country on the other side of the globe, on the border with the US. No way you can just waltz in there with just the passport, right?

Well, no, you can't, but it's a lot easier to receive a short-term visa for Mexico if you're a Russian national, but also, you can enter Mexico for up to 180 days if you have a Schengen or a US visa.

In a week that started with some pro-Russian bloke getting his dong blown off by shrapnel, followed by hundreds of mobiks being housed atop an ammo dump and consequently obliterated in a HIMARS strike, and Vladimir Sovolyov urging the Russian people to stop complaining and just embrace death, Ukraine is now confirmed to be receiving Marders, Bradleys (50+) and AMX-10 RCs in the future. And it's only Thursday. Happy New year indeed.

Wonder how Putin's requested Christmas ceasefire is going to go...

US to send Ukraine dozens of Bradleys in $2.85B aid package (AP)

The U.S. will send Ukraine nearly $3 billion in military aid, in a massive new package that will for the first time include several dozen Bradley fighting vehicles, U.S. officials said Thursday, in the Biden administration’s latest step to send increasingly lethal and powerful weapons to help Ukraine beat back Russian forces.

European allies also stepped up their weapons commitments. Germany announced it will provide armored personnel carriers and a Patriot missile battery to Ukraine, and France said it will soon hold talks to arrange for the delivery of armored combat vehicles.

All of the announcements, however, fall short of sending heavier battle tanks, which are more complex to use and have a longer-range gun. The Bradley, an armored carrier used to transport troops to combat, is not a tank but is known as a “tank-killer” because of the anti-tank missile it can fire.

The latest U.S. aid — totaling about $2.85 billion and about 50 Bradleys — is the largest in a series of packages of military equipment that the Pentagon has pulled from its stockpiles to send to Ukraine. It is aimed at getting as much to the Ukrainian forces as possible during the winter months, before spring sets in and an expected increase in fighting begins.

An announcement is expected Friday, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the package have not been publicly announced.

Also included in the aid package will be HUMVEES, Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles, or MRAPs, and a large amount of missiles and other ammunition, according to the U.S. officials.

Not merely requested: ordered – and immediately ignored by the DNR head Denis Pushilin. Needless to say, Ukraine thinks "fuck that".

Iranian attack drone found to contain parts from more than a dozen US companies
    https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/04/politics/iranian-drone-parts-13-us-companies-ukraine-russia/index.html

Parts made by more than a dozen US and Western companies were found inside a single Iranian drone downed in Ukraine last fall, according to a Ukrainian intelligence assessment obtained exclusively by CNN.

[parts] ranging from smaller equipment like semiconductors and GPS modules to larger parts like engines

The assessment, which was shared with US government officials late last year, illustrates the extent of the problem facing the Biden administration, which has vowed to shut down Iran’s production of drones that Russia is launching by the hundreds into Ukraine.

It could be? The article came out today but it refers to a drone that was shot down “last fall”. But there have also been other reports since the beginning of the war about the origin of parts in Russian (and later Iranian) weapons.
