We still need a police system, as much bad as they do they still do good things. Defunding only puts stress on the police which leads to making things worse with them and rising crime rates as they lack the funds to have enough police out to enforce laws.

What we really need is a system that works and it will require our elected officials to put that into place. It has been their failing to fix the system for decades that has lead to a system that allows the police to get away with nearly anything. Your City can do it, your County can do it, your State can do it, even the Feds can make the necessary changes if congress wishes it (though it would be stepping on a lot of toes since police are supposed to be under State/Local control). That's a lot of failures and while I'm glad to see the feds cracking down, has any of our elected officials changed or is actively trying to change the laws governing police to prevent these issues? Any politician that promotes defunding are copouts, it's nothing more than deflecting blame while at the same time not actually fixing the system. Be angry at the police it says, not us for failing to keep them in line.

What I'm saying here is we shouldn't be so angry at the dog attacking us, we should be far more angry at the one holding the leash and allowing it to happen as it is their responsibility to keep it from harming others.

A lot of these changes have to occur at the state and national level. Unfortunately, most local municipalities are barred from making any substantive changes to their policing policies (either explicitly via laws or implicitly by threat of withdrawing monetary support that municipalities depend on). They have some leeway, but a lot of states explicitly limit what local authorities can and can't do.

The biggest thing we can do is take away police immunity. Hold them accountable for mistakes. Right now, they can get away with just about anything. Most of them fail upward. And even when they are held accountable, they fight and often get reinstated. Our system of accountability is broken and we need to fix it.

Naw, you still put down the dog that attacks us and then puniythe owner for not controlling their dog. Police don't need to be a multi tool, swat, public workers. When you have police killing people that want help you turn them and others away from seeking help or helping the system in place.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be punished, however the current system puts finding guilt and deciding punishment in the hands of the police so they aren't punsihed if they don't want to be. If you defund them that will still be the case, they will still be able to kill & assault people and get away with it unless they end up in the media's spotlight.

What's happening is our attention is being deflected toward the result, not the cause. The laws governing police are too weak, even putting them above the law. So long as we focus on the police, the politicians will just sit around doing nothing to find a real long term solution. We should stop voting for politicians who are not actively working on it and vote for those who are. Ignoring those who just say they'll defund, because that doesn't change anything, it's just a worthless way to punish them in an attempt to make them do what's right.

Excellent summation of it all. I do not believe Tildes has a "gold" award so take a fist bump.
