It's quite common, but to me it is weird because you are essentially referring to yourself; as well as introducing a way to side-step self-accountability.

I don't read it as an attempt to "side-step self-accountability". Stepping outside of yourself and seeing yourself as, essentially, a sort of meat-computer seems more like a quirky way to ackhowledge that our decisions aren't always as logically based as we would like. The same message could be expressed in first person, sure, but I think it would lessen the impact.

You are your brain, but the brain is a lot more fragmented than it seems at first glance. Different parts of the brain do not appear to be fully aware of what is happening in other parts of the brain, in a way that makes the organ at times undermine its own goals and confuse itself.

When someone says, "My brain does X," I read it as, "A different segment of myself than the one that is speaking now does X."

The desert road would feel safer because you are the one in control, and most people tend to trust their own skill.

I think it's about control. I'm the same way. If I'm in control of the car going fast, then it's fine. But on a rollercoaster I'm trusting someone else with my life at that speed and the loops....

A popular roller coaster safely serves thousands of people a day. There is a whole team of people performing regular maintenance and inspections on it. On the other hand, depending on the road we’re talking about, who knows what condition it’s in, where the sudden hazards (curves, other traffic, wandering wildlife) may be, or if my car (and myself as the driver) is up to the task.

Sure, as we see here, coaster accidents can still happen. But they’re exceedingly rare compared with car accidents. It’s simply a more controlled situation and the odds are much more in your favor on a coaster, in general.

The risk assessment is different for things that have utility. A roller coaster has no purpose other than pleasure, but a lot of people need cars for essential or valuable activities.
