Offbeat Fridays – The thread where offbeat headlines become front page news
Tildes is a very serious site, where we discuss very serious matters like artificial intelligence, highways and school meals. Tags culled from the highest voted topics from the last seven days, if anyone was wondering.
But one of my favourite tags happens to be offbeat! Taking its original inspiration from Sir Nils Olav III, this thread is looking for any far-fetched offbeat
stories lurking in the newspapers. It may not deserve its own post, but it deserves a wider audience!
Woman whose real name is Barbie Oppenheimer speaks out on the craze of the summer
Independent – Olivia Hebert – 31st August 2023
I'm sure that with a bit of elbow grease we could turn even this into a serious discussion.
OK, this wasn't this week, but it totally fits the theme of the thread, it's extremely local news that most of you likely won't have seen, and gave locals quite a chuckle at the time (after getting over the initial scare).
Not real title, but the way we locals like to describe the incident: Military special forces stage forceful overnight takeover of local strip club
It really happened like described, but the missing bit of information being that it was permanently closed (moved to another location) and the city offered the building to the military to do training drills - the various special forces groups pay pretty well to stage training drills in real buildings slated to be torn down because changing up environments is really valuable. The problem here is the city did a really, really bad job of notifying the local residents, so the first most knew about it was the sudden sound of low flying helicopters followed by explosions as the trainees used actual breaching charges to blow the doors off the building.
Police stop man driving with a bull in the front seat.
The best part is the bull's name.
Yup. I submitted that one to this thread last week also.. But it was late in the week and it really deserves to be seen.
A link to the news article popped up on my YouTube feed just after I saw this thread. I didn't even notice it was last week's news lol
No worries! We all need to see the bull riding shotgun.
