Why use al Jazeera of all sources? It's probably the least reliable news outlet when it comes to this topic...

It is an Arab outlet and presents an Arab perspective. Not that this is bad or invalid, just something to be aware of. I understand that they are generally factual but they are viewed through an idelogical lens (as is true generally true for any source).

I find it interesting that where the English Wikipedia describes Israel as a 'country', the Arabic Wikipedia uses the term 'partially-recognised state'. Both are entirely true but present very different realities.

On most topics they're pretty decent, but there are a few areas where they've had demonstrable biases in their reporting. As you mentioned, anything about Qatar is the most stark, but anything reported about Israel tends to gain a moderate anti-Israel veneer (less than any other Arab-origin news network but still there). The other one that they've been called on is having an anti-India bias in some of their reporting.

People in the Occupied Territories have been suffering for decades. This type of thing happens when you have your boot on peoples' throats for that long.

Edit: I should add that I think it's inevitable, not justified. I hold no love for Hamas.

That is the point I think. The historic Saudi/Israeli deal was going to make huge strides towards normalizing relations between Israel and its neighbors and possibly help stabilize the region. Hamas doesn’t want that. It wouldn’t be surprising if Iran had a hand in promoting this to torpedo the deal, they’d be the biggest losers out of it.

Look for Hezbollah to attack from the North as well very soon.

What do we think is the likelihood of Israel “reengaging” (occupying) in Gaza? My gut feeling would be that it’s very likely after this.

I would not be surprised if Israel outright annexes Gaza after this.

Wouldn't that involve citizenship and voting rights for people born in Gaza?

They could just annex the land and leave the people in refugee or similar camps.

Yeah Israel is never going to annex Gaza, in 70 years we were never interested in that. But I think op means occupy

I used “reengagement” as a complementary term to the disengagement Israel did in 2005.

Yes, I do. Since the IDF left in 2005, Hamas has taken over, rockets are launched like candy, and now militants execute this attack. I wouldn’t be surprised if the lack of an Israeli presence has contributed to the intelligence failure. I think Israel will likely occupy Gaza in the next 96 hours, and will comb through every cubic inch of the territory looking for weapons.

Murdering civilians in cold blood, kidnapping families with kids, burning down houses with families hiding inside is never justified

I agree. The equivocation on whether attacking and kidnapping civilians is 'justified or not' is distasteful. I've also noticed an eyebrow-raising comment on the other, locked thread about Hamas targeting 'illegal settlements' — yet this escalation is targeting settlements in southern Israel which are within the 1948, UN-demarcated borders.
