They don't even have to do very much – just the threat of an attack is enough for insurers to raise their rates and shipping companies to refuse to risk their (expensive) vessels.

What else can they do when the US outspends most other countries on military might and acts as a playground bully? Sure they could fire on a warship and start an international incident or even possibly a full out war against the US, but that sounds incredibly stupid as the US has most of the western nations as military allies and would just lead to another possible 10+ year unwinnable ground war that the US is so found of.

To the US' credit, this time it doesn't look like they're the instigators (or even the agitators). They're actually doing a good job protecting trade lanes, which is what a self proclaimed "world police" should be doing.

I've seen so many people in real life and then on social media dig ruts in their brain with their thinking that they still use the same responses despite the facts being different.

Iran asks the Houthis to attack peaceful cargo ships? Iran sends a warship? Dam the U.S. for starting it all!!! /sarcasm.

The U.S. doesn't have a good track record in that theater of the world... Afghanistan & Iraq occupations chief among the example cases.
