That said, I did notice that no one actually posted directly about the attack that killed the Americans. Perhaps it is in a megathread.

Fucking around in Deir el-zour (note, there's a couple of ways to pronounce that in English, so there's a few different 'names' floating around for that province) takes forces away from the ongoing suppression of ISIS operations in the area. If ISIS can reconstitute, they potentially can stage another attack on the prison. The last thing Iraq wants is them getting out.

But, sadly, it's hard to drum up support for the SDF when other NATO allies refer to them as a terrorist org. So, it's unlikely to evoke a joint response from NATO forces in Baghdad.

I’m confused, why were US troops being housed in a Syrian base? My understanding is Syria is not an ally by any stretch. I know the US has allied with Kurdish fighters, but I don’t understand how that dynamic leads to the US military assisting in training a faction in a country they’re ostensibly not welcome in?

Syrian base as in "base in Syria" rather than "base owned by Syrian government".

Eastern Syria is largely uncontrolled by the Syrian Government. The Syrian Defense Force partners with 'Coalition' forces to support stability in the region, operate against ISIS agents, and... Well, counter Syrian and Russian influence in the area.

The Coalition isn't just the US but I'm sure other governments have no stakes in the region or assets moving around, wink wink.

So, more like SVA vs NVA... Except this time the SVA is in charge of running the prisons holding ISIS.
