I read the article, but I feel like I'm missing something? I'm not clear where the estimate of one million is from. The WSJ doesn't seem to explain how they arrived at the number nor reference an external source for it. A lot of the article is dedicated to discussing population totals instead.

I'm not clear where the estimate of one million is from.

one million dead or wounded (article's title)

A confidential Ukrainian estimate from earlier this year put the number of dead Ukrainian troops at 80,000 and the wounded at 400,000, according to people familiar with the matter. Western intelligence estimates of Russian casualties vary, with some putting the number of dead as high as nearly 200,000 and wounded at around 400,000.

      80k+400k+200k+400k = 1.08M

Ukrainian drone attack triggers massive blasts in Russia's Tver region (Reuters)

Sept 18 (Reuters) - A major Ukrainian drone attack on Russia triggered a giant blast and forced the partial evacuation of residents near the site of a large Russian arsenal in the Tver region on Wednesday, war bloggers and some media reported.

Unverified video and images on social media showed a huge ball of flame blasting high into the night sky and detonations thundering across a lake in the region that lies northwest of Moscow and not far from the border with Belarus.

The videos I've seen from the blast are absolutely insane. They're not quite as big as the disaster in Beirut, Lebanon a few years ago but of the same magnitude it seems. The fact that Ukraine is destroying munition on this scale is going to affect Russia's logistics yet again. When they still need to push Ukraine out of Russia. Going to be difficult to censor something like this too.

Ukraine’s Gun-Armed Ground Robot Just Cleared A Russian Trench In Kursk (Forbes)

Back in May, Ukrainian developers revealed a new armed ground robot—the Fury. Four months later, a Fury has fought—and reportedly won—the type’s first major skirmish. On or just before Thursday, one of the four-wheeled, shopping-cart-sized Furies assaulted a trench in Russia’s Kursk Oblast.

This feels rather off-topic and insensitive. Russia and Ukraine did have the pandemic, and between them had hundreds of thousands of deaths, possibly over a million if highest estimates of death counts are to be believed. That does not negate the terrible toll that the war has taken.
