    Assange holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy out of the stated fear that once in Sweden, extradition to the USA would be more likely, where Assange fears the death penalty.

    Yet both the UK & Sweden are bound by the same EU law to extradite, but only if the death penalty is off the table.

    I'm at a loss to understand what he gained. The last year he had no access to internet, and was basically self-imprisoned inside a single room.

      What he gained? Martyr status. He isn't the white hat Manning or Snowden are, so he had to find another way to feel important...? Probably not quite the truth, but it's that or an irrational...

        i'm not even sure you can say that he's gained martyr status, to be honest. there are obviously some people who support him, but after his antics during the 2016 presidential election, his institutional support beyond wikileaks basically evaporated and most people lost any goodwill they had toward him as an individual.
