Kurzgesagt did a great job with the title, thumbnail and wording of the video in making it approachable to antivax parents.

Except that, as the video itself acknowledges, "feelings are often immune to facts" - and the main feeling at the centre of anti-vax arguments is fear for one's children. That's a very strong motivator. These people are legitimately afraid for the health of their children. Fear, plus a side helping of parental love, is an almost unbeatable combination.

Anti-vaxxers have already got governments and doctors and health organisations and schools and hospitals all telling them that they need to vaccinate their children - and they're willing to disbelieve all of them. When someone is already mistrusting most of society, it's not hard to extend that mistrust to one video channel. This video channel could be either run by the government to spread its lies, or could be a well-meaning person who's been gullible enough to fall for those lies.

Yes, the video might reach some people who are open to being reached, but it's not going to sway the true believers who have already pitted themselves against the whole scientific establishment and all of government.

Lost causes are lost causes. Swaying the non-extremists is what's important: People don't suddenly become extremists/lost causes, they go through a long transitional period during which they slowly become radicalized. Attacking that transition is arguably a lot more effective than attacking the end result.

A more legitimate fear would be of your child contracting measles or whooping cough. Fear for one’s kids is on both sides of this, but in the case of anti-vaxxers they’re using their kids as props for grinding that ax.

So I'm going to pick this comment from Youtube:

“Roses are red” Violet’s are blue” “Shut up Anti-Vaxxer, I’m going to sneeze on you”

Isn't it the case that most anti-vaxxers are parents that probably have been vaccinated as kids? Sad that their freedom to decide has nothing to do with their own choices but all to do with someone else's future...

Back to the topic, I think this problem stems from a feeling or fear of personal guilt: vaccinating your kid is an action you take, so if it's hurt or it dies it is an effect of your deliberation, a voluntary act. Whereas it catching some dealy plague and dying, however crazy it sounds, is not an effect of your actions. So these people prefer inaction instead of action that might even have a slight chance of side effects (which are faux, but they believe they aren't, so doesn't really matter).

Maybe it's time to do away with the idea that parents are the sole owners of kids and have all the decision power over them. Many sons and daughters have remorse regarding some or all actions of their parents, and I think everyone deserves a certain standard, lower limit of quality of care as they grow up. There are of course laws about this worldwide, which we see applied in parental abuse cases, but maybe the kids from age 0 need to have more "autonomy" embodied by certain dictations over the wills of parents in the context of their effect on the kids.

Kurzgesagt's intentions are for the better but I feel that this won't even reach the anti-vax community. If you lurk their groups/boards, they have an excuse for everything you throw at them.

Those might be the extreme anti-vaxers, but there's also a middle group. Those that want the best for their children but genuinely don't know the right thing to do. Educating those parents is...

Hopefully this becomes the top result if you search for anti-vax keywords.
