    At first I thought he was a soldier who whistleblew to expose the wrongdoings of his nation's army, but it seems like (according to the "Wikipedia" page) he did it unintentionally because he thought special forces soldier's were being "excessively" scrutinize. I do wonder what else he thought would happen?

      I believe he thought that one soldier in particular was being scapegoated by the entire chain of command as a "silver bullet" to war crimes committed by the Australian military, particularly the special forces.       (IMO, leaders who order war crimes, and soldiers who follow their illegal orders should both be punished.)
