The right-wing Dutch cabinet has fallen

I do not have an English source yet, but there are two Dutch liveblogs:

https://nos.nl/liveblog/2569753-pvv-stapt-uit-de-coalitie-vvd-nsc-en-bbb-reageren-vol-onbegrip

https://www.nu.nl/politiek/6357901/live-politiek-pvv-stapt-uit-coalitie-na-wens-voor-meer-asielmaatregelen.html

It's happened after the far-right PVV wanted to have more measures against migration, which were (in my opinion) unrealistic and inhumane.

This'll most likely mean Dutch snap elections soon.

...Why would you give up your power as a threat??

Last week, Wilders demanded coalition partners sign on to a 10-point plan that aims to radically slash migration, including using the army to guard land borders and turning away all asylum-seekers. He said that if immigration policy is not toughened up, his party “is out of the Cabinet.”

Most likely, it's a combination of factors:

      1. He was beginning to slip in the polls.
      2. By making the cabinet fall on this, assuming it'll be followed up by elections(which is very likely) it may become a dominant theme during the election.
      3. His voterbase was(is?) getting disappointed with his party's lack of achievements, and his leadership wasn't outright questioned yet but getting shaky.
      4. He made threats about making the cabinet fall before but didn't follow up. Doing that again would make him look weak.

All in all though, this is what populism is: no real content, just people shouting to win votes regardless of whether it actually reflects reality.

Ok yeah no valid of course, but do keep in mind that in a coalition that means also kicking the stand from under the feet of your coalition parties. It's not just his power he's threatening to undermine, also the other parties' power. It effectively means that he tells them they will no longer rule either.

The cabinet basically never got off the ground, achieved pretty much nothing was delivered to the voters and it was plagued with constant infighting.

The "extraparlementary cabinet" strategy was a complete failure, I assume the only reason the PVV went along with it in the first place was because otherwise a cabinet would never be established to begin with..?

It's been nothing but one giant waste of time and political circus's.
