Anyone know the closest Canada has political commentary content like the US?
Obviously, Canada and U.S. are entirely different political systems with different media environments and so forth, but as someone who likes the content of podcasters like The Daily Show, Trevor Noah, Hasan Minhaj and podcasters/tech journalists like Scott Galloway and Kara Swisher and "free thinkers" like Bari Weiss and her ilk, I am wondering if Canada has any similar content that I am just unable to find with google/duck searches? As a Canadian, I think I should be consuming more content that goes over Canadian news rather than American but our media environment seems really barren if you are trying to avoid CBC produced material.
The closest I could find was Canadaland but after a few episodes, I found that host is of a particular brand of "progressive" that I don't particularly care for.
Aww, you don't like CBC content? :'( but we have Because News and This Hour Has 22 Minutes
Beaverton this week: Florida, Calgary win Stanley Cup. Hon mentio: Indoor cactus facing worse conditions than actual dessert - RIP my plants.
The Goose has a lot of good electoral reform content but less weekly. They recently had an election special with these fine Aussies back during the elections.
Anything from the CBC (or any media corporation backing) has to toe the line. and it's not like I don't consume CBC content, I do the National and Front Burner, but with podcasts, I typically prefer it when hosts give their honest opinion even when it may deviate from party lines as life is alot more nuanced and complicated than our 2 party system.
And honestly, I am not a fan of the fact that they shy away from certain issues.
and they don't have long form and don't bring on experts to explain an issue in depth much. the closest they come to that is About That With Andre Chang and that's about the only thing I really enjoy that they produce.
jesus christ that was hysterical. I think I found my new favorite YT channel :-)
Do you know the integrity of their fact checking? I've watched a few of their videos and it's been enjoyable but I am having a heck of a time trying to figure out how much of what he says is opinion vs fact and who is verifying the facts. Like is it like the Daily Show/Last Week Tonight where there are legit journalists and lawyers behind the scenes making sure everyone that makes it on the camera is factual?
I think it's just one guy and stuff should be fact checked, yeah. I looked a little into electoral reform and home grown oligarchy and seems consistent, but not a thorough look for sure.
I really enjoy Peter Mansbridge's podcast Good Talk. He has two guests and they discuss events of the week in a relaxed but professional way. No hype just well informed opinions from seasoned journalists.
The Hill Times covers everything that happens on the Hill but is paywalled. I just use archive.is for anything I want to read.
For behind the scenes look from a decidedly conservative viewpoint there's Blacklock's Reporter. They scoop a LOT of news that never makes it to the mainstream press. Sometimes its quite shocking the stuff they dig up that never makes the 'big news corporations'. They are credentialed with the parliamentary press corp. Unfortunately without the 300/yr subscription you only get to read the first few sentences of each report but its still worth reading.
For an overall curated site of most Canadian media you cant beat https://nationalnewswatch.com/
You might check out the Beaverton podcast. While the publication is satire, their podcast actually does discuss real recent news. It's... podcast-y, so don't expect much deep diving research or anything, it's basically just a bunch of comedians chatting about Canadian news. I personally enjoy it, though.
Steve Boots is pretty good. Quick videos on politics of the day. Seems pretty fair. Plus he has a cat!.
