From the State Dept's travel advisory page since November:

Exercise increased caution when traveling to Mainland China due to arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including in relation to exit bans.

They worked in the commerce department. I have to say, taking a vacation to a place that you are fighting during your day job while they keep doing this would be a bit too high-risk for me.

Considering the current political climate I wouldn’t be surprised if there are also hamfisted attempts at actual espionage being arranged over compromised channels.

This is one of the big issues when both of the governments involved have proven themselves to be untrustworthy: there’s no way to even guess which one’s in the wrong in a specific situation.

TBH, I think if you're below a certain shade of white right now, you're more likely to get disappeared in the USA than in China. Tis bad times.

A U.S. government employee has been banned from leaving China after traveling there in a personal capacity, the State Department said Tuesday, marking the latest case where Beijing has stopped U.S. nationals from departing the country.
