Isn't this what's thought happened to Mars? It used to have liquid water and an atmosphere, but its magnetosphere stopped working and its atmosphere got stripped off, so its water evaporated.

It would be wild for humanity to eventually reach that planet only to find we were a few millennia late of witnessing life on it.
I think the United States should enforce sanctions on Trappist-1 until it agrees to stop stripping the atmosphere.
