I want to believe. However, I’m generally a skeptic on alien visitation. Skeptics of Tildes, why is this article silly? Edit: clarity that I was asking about this particular article.

Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for. I had not heard of the people involved in the article, or their background. Still, it would be great if we could confirm/discount these sightings,...

Still, it would be great if we could confirm/discount these sightings, and if confirmed figure out what they are. Based on the descriptions the tech sounds decades ahead of what is publicly acknowledged. But then the F-117 program was active for a decade or so before even being shared with other US Air Force generals.
Surely in an unknown civilization they would not be homogeneous enough to prevent fringe elements from rocking the boat? Even with our population limited to the size it is on a single planet,...

Even with our population limited to the size it is on a single planet, there are instance of exactly this with people that generally the world population has agreed should not be contacted - https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-46337353

Why would it be silly? As far as I could tell nobody is saying we're investigating aliens. Pilots are reporting that they see unidentified aircraft. There are reasoanble explanations for it being a mistake, weather phenomenon, or an actual aircraft. It would be silly to dismiss a pilot's reports off-hand. But it would be equally silly to assume that an unexplained aircraft is from aliens.
Simply put, more people walk around with high quality cameras on them at all times than ever before. If these events were occurring with regularity, we should have substantial evidence of these...

In technical terms, I believe weird shit happens in the sky. Some reports indicate that the objects are being controlled by conscious beings. Some point to meteorological occurrences. We don't know for sure, but at least it warrants investigation. Navy pilots are probably not the most ignorant, weak-minded people out there. Unless there's a meteorologist, climatologist or physicist in this thread, I bet they know a lot more about the kind of things that typically happen out there than all of us combined. Their reports carry some weight.

Not necessarily. It's entirely possible that an unknown civilization might have the means to efficiently conceal the traces of their visists.

You're making the assumption that this civilization has anything close to what we call "individuality". They could be perfect clones. Or a hivemind.

Or other perfectly natural phenomena. See: Optical phenomena, Backscatter, Ball lightning, Morning Glory Clouds, Fallstreak holes, etc.

Oh I generally agree, I meant to specifically ask why this article is silly.
