Almost solely thanks to Swedish keeper Zećira Mušović who played the game of her life, the US are eliminated from the WWC, and Sweden are moving on to quarterfinals. The powerhouse that is the USA women's team has had such an insane run that it's almost beyond belief. From a comment on r/WomensSoccer:

Since 1991 (effective beginning of organized women's football) there have been

    8 World Cups

    7 Olympics

    9 CONCACAF Championships

The United States has won 17 of them. 4 world cups (50%), 4 Olympics (57%), and 8 CONCACAF (89%).

Before today, they had only ever failed to place top 3 in a tournament ONCE. 2016, where poetically enough, the Swedes knocked them out in the first knockout stage of the Olympics in, you guessed it, a penalty shootout.

    The end of an era.

I wasn’t able to finish the article because of the paywall so I don’t understand why the era is ending. What is different this time that makes them certain this isn’t just another blip like 2016...

I wasn’t able to finish the article because of the paywall so I don’t understand why the era is ending. What is different this time that makes them certain this isn’t just another blip like 2016 that will be followed up by another 7 years of dominance
