Huh, I figured he'd get a better contract than that. Did teams just get tired of waiting?

Yes he had a resurgence in the previous year, but that was driven by an unsustainable shooting percentage. He definitely could have gotten more total money on a long term deal, but given his age and injury history no team is going to bet big right now. It's not like he's a guy that you can play if he falls out of your top six.

He's going into a situation where he'll get plenty of opportunities, could score 30+, and can get paid better next summer once the cap goes up a bit.

It's bizarre. He reportedly had better offers earlier in free agency so it seems like the waiting may have been what did him in:

Told Vlad Tarasenko had a four-year offer at $5.5 m per season from Ottawa early in free agency. Had 1 year offers from Carolina at $5.25 m and San Jose, 1 yr at $6 m #GoSensGo #sjsharks #Letsgocanes

The only other reason I can see for him to turn down those deals is that he's hoping to have a huge bounce back year in Ottawa and then cash in on a rising cap for a better deal (he'll only be 32 next off-season). The #1RW spot is his to take beside Tkachuk-Stutzle, and the Senators' system (such as it is...) prioritizes offence. The Sharks are trying to tank and the Canes run a tight ship with Brind'Amour; Ottawa is probably the best option if you want to juice your numbers.

At $5M for one year, I love this for the Sens. Very low risk, high reward. We needed a Debrincat replacement and Tarasenko is only one year removed from a ppg season.

Giroux is a better player and will remain on the top line, even if he is 4 years older than Tarasenko. Tank will play with Norris and Batherson on a still very talented second line. If Tank didn't have a no trade clause then I could see him on the top line to inflate his numbers for potential trade bait at the deadline. As it stands, he has that clause, so I see no reason why Ottawa, returning the same coach, would go away from the top line that was so successful last season.

The big rub here is that Ottawa has put themselves into a position where they have to get rid of someone in order to be able to afford their third line center-- Shane Pinto. That further dilutes the quality of their bottom 6. They are not going to be able to really compete with so much money committed to the top lines and so little to their depth. At least not until the salary cap rises appreciably.

I can't figure out how Tarasenko fits with the team long term either. Like you siad, they won't be able to afford him without moving somebody else and their prospect pool isn't as deep as it used to be.

Even without the NTC, I don't think that Ottawa would have signed him as someone to flip at the deadline. With new ownership in charge, Dorion's job likely hinges on making the playoffs. If Tarasenko plays like he wants $8 million and ends up getting it somewhere else next year, that's cool.

I don't think it's a big deal to lose Tank after one season since the UFA crop looks a whole lot better next off season. Couple that with a rise in the cap and Ottawa could end up with a younger solid player to replace him that's on a longer term deal.

Either way, it will be an interesting season in Ottawa. And they're not even done building out their team yet. Gotta make space to re-sign Pinto still. Likely moving out Joseph if anyone will take him after his poor season. I'm just concerned that this leaves 4 of their bottom 6 as AHL level players. Teams that have won recently have shown how necessary it is to have 4 lines that contribute. We'll see how it goes.

I love Giroux on the top line but he and Stutzle are probably the two best playmakers on the team. I could see Smith moving Giroux to the 2nd line to complement Batherson-Norris (Norris being more of a goal-scoring centre than a playmaker) and putting the team's purest sniper (Tarasenko) with its best playmaker (Stutzle).

I wouldn't mind just seeing how Batherson-Norris-Tarasenko fares as a second line, though. All three are capable of being excellent players.

The Sens just need more than one functioning forward line at 5v5 this year--doesn't matter to me how they do it.

Strickland now walking back his claims about the Carolina offer:

Correction….Offer from Carolina was significantly less than what I was originally told. According to source, highest offer from the #letsgocanes was less than $4 million.

If the Sens' multi-year offer was legit then Tarasenko's decision still doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but who knows.
