Cheers! I meant to watch this Simon Gauzy episode before and got sidetracked. He reminds me of another Frenchman but a tennis player (whose name I can't remember), who could beat practically anyone on his day with the craziest shots but was never consistent enough to be a real top contender. Out of the others, I've only watched the Hugo Calderon episode previously; that behind-the-back shot is wild!

Maybe you are referring to Gael Monfils? Wildly athletic but inconsistent.

Actually, this made me realize I was conflating three people. I really was thinking about Dustin Brown, but I could only remember his having dreadlocks and not his name. That made me think of Yannick Noah, though I couldn't remember his name either, just that he was French. The French name I thought of was Gael Monfils, but I suspected that was wrong somehow, and you mentioning his athleticism convinced me because the player I was thinking of was known for his touch, not athleticism. So in a roundabout way, I got there in the end.

I suppose I did put a little extra sauce on it with my memories as well, because I'm not sure Brown was ever someone you could consider to be a potential top-10 player. He does have a habit of pulling off great shots though, and would make playing against the top players look fun.

What a trip. Your description made me think of Henri Leconte as someone with an impeccable touch (and showmanship) but never really made it other than a French Open final which is honourable no less.

But the main thing is probably that I barely paid any attention to Roland Garros because clay is my least favorite surface. Seems like an entertaining guy though.
