The Vaporfly variants used by Eliud Kipchoge to run the first sub-two hour marathon and by fellow Kenyan Brigid Kosgei to smash the women’s marathon world record both contained triple carbon plates inside thick, ultra-compressed foam, said by Nike to help improve running economy by up to four percent.

Technology has definitely helped push humans to breaking more records. After all, there's only so much potential in the human body. Another example I can think of are swimsuits made with special materials to reduce drag. Should we return to having people engage in these events nude so as to remove the variable of a company's breakthrough product? Or... I guess as the article shows, some kind of governing body placing arbitrary restrictions on the gear athletes use. But, that's not as fun.

Your example did actually happen. Around 2008 (I think) there was a swimsuit that kind of did this and people smashed records left and right. It was banned from competition before long.

I saw a video on youtube about this the other day. I felt like I was watching an ad. And even if these shoes are getting banned, I see this as a huge win for nike, because non professional runners with big pockets are going to get these shoes since they are the best. I say this as someone who wanted to pick up running shoes for a while. These were almost 300 bucks tho, so I guess i'd rather run barefoot
