Should we be banning people for having detectable THC levels in sports, potentially derailing careers over a little weed which is not going to make you run any faster? Absolutely not, but them's...

Absolutely not, but them's the rules. Foolish by Richardson, she must have known she'd be tested. But this rule needs to go. With all the actual performance enhancing doping going on, it really hurts the image of antidoping as a whole to see somebody get slapped down for weed while EPO and steroid users go undetected for years.

I don't give a fuck that she smoked weed and I think it's incredibly stupid that this means she'll probably miss the Olympics BUT (and this is a big but) I believe one of the reasons they still enforce it so much is that THC can be used as a masking agent for other PEDs. I'm not saying that's the case, but I do think it's one of the reasons WADA haven't totally tossed it from their list yet.

I believe this is a myth. It's only banned in-competition, which makes little sense if it can be used to mask agents that are banned out of competition, and it being a masking agent is not one of the cited reasons for keeping it banned. The only mechanism I can think of in which it would be useful is it being diuretic, but so is caffeine; the effect is nothing like that of dedicated diuretic drugs that are banned as masking agents and because they are useful for reducing weight in sports with weight classes. It's not like presence of one drug automatically masks the detection of another.

Ahhh, I didn't realize it was only in-competition. Either way, as stupid as a rule it is, it's still a rule. I hate the email client I have to use for work, but it's what we do, so I have to use it.

Seems like USADA/WADA are kind of ambivalent about the whole thing as well, since she was given only a one-month suspension (presumably in return for sitting through a couple of classes about how drugs are bad, mmkay, which is a punishment that's been handed out before for the same offense).

As Robin Williams put it, Marijuana is NOT a "performance enhancing" drug

I wonder if all she did was take some full-spectrum CBD for training inflammation.
