Yes, part of my job requires me to coordinate with well known (in their niche) writers to secure partnerships. Success is incredibly varied. Often I'm communicating with agents, though some writers have their direct contact info on their websites. Even getting a reply from an agent feels like a win sometimes.

I am a little confused by your situation. Did you contact a celebrity's relative via Instagram to try to get in touch with the celebrity?

When I was a teenager, I used to volunteer with the security team at DragonCon to get a free ticket, so I met a lot of famous people like Ann McCaffrey, Elvira, James Marsters, and so on.

However, there is only one time that I have purposely reached out to a famous person for more personal reasons:

As a teenager, I was big into collecting strange music. I discovered that April Winchell has a website containing MP3s of strange music she'd come across during her radio career, so I downloaded my favorites.

Many years later, I discovered that I'd lost one of these MP3s. She no longer hosted it on her website, and I could not find another copy of it anywhere else. So, figuring that April Winchell likely still had this MP3 lying around somewhere, I set about trying to figure out how to contact her.

All I could find was her Etsy account, so I messaged her there. It took her a long time to respond (many months if I recall correctly), but I did get my MP3 in the end.

It was a great experience! She was very sweet, sharp, interesting, and gave me major grandmotherly vibes. She is possibly my favorite celebrity I've ever met (I can't decide between her and James Randi, who was also a total delight). Unlike most VIPs, she moved amongst the regular con-goers and frequently struck up conversations with strangers.

All the times I met her, it was while I was not working. She would just happen to be in the same elevator that I was in or something like that, and she would start talking to me. The first couple of times, I did not recognize her, and other people around me told me afterwards who it was. When I acted starstruck ("Wow, you mean Anne McCaffrey spoke to me?!"), they were like, "Nah, she talks to everyone." And, sure enough, most of my friends and family who attended DragonCon during that time period met and talked with her, usually without knowing who she was until after the fact.

She also used to have a website where she made fun of celebrity chefs and I bought her book. We communicated a bit back then on her forums and she was great.

Yeah, I liked her and did not find it intimidating at all to interact with her. She seemed like the kind of person I would know in real life, if things had gone a bit differently for either her or me. She is certainly eccentric, but in keeping with other people I know.

I don't think celebrities are a class apart like people treat them sometimes. They can be hard to contact because they are busy and have lots of people trying to contact them. I think there is a tendency to perceive inaccessibility as a mark of superiority, which just is not the case.

My mother was friends with Michael Stipe when they were both art students at UGA; they lived across the street from each other, they painted portraits of each other in class, he dated her roommate, etc. When she tells me stories about her university friends and the hijinx they got up to, she does not make it sound like he was the odd one out in their social circle. He was a very good musician, of course, but otherwise just a normal guy — eccentric, but no more so than their other friends.

They really are regular people with an added layer of security sometimes. Being a celebrity means you have a lot of people interested in your time for many reasons and there is no reason to give it if it's not a genuine reason.

I've spoken to people of varying fame over the years, from meeting musicians after concerts, to movie stars to famous tech billionaires and politicians.

Most of my communications with them has been personal and face to face. Though, I did speak to various donors via email and phone for work previously. Getting in touch directly with them is always difficult. If you really need to speak with them for a legal matter, a lawyer is your best way to go. Otherwise, if it's personal, you might want to see if you can find them elsewhere.

I once dm'd Wil Wheaton on Reddit asking about his son's vegetarian bacon recipe and he responded.

Once during ComicCon I saw Colm Meany walking down the street. I was with a large group outside a bar, no one else noticed but he saw that I saw him and you could see him visibly brace himself. I just nodded, and he looked super relieved, nodded back and carried on. He probably thought I was being considerate that he was just trying to relax after a long day, but in reality I had just enough tact to not yell out "Chief O'Brien" because I forgot his real name. Though having seen his relief I decided I would treat any celebrity I saw on the street the same way in the future.

I meet a lot of famous people through my job - musicians, actors, politicians, scientists, athletes, comedians, etc. They're just people. Some are cool. Some are jerks. I try to be professional and mostly leave them alone. (Sorry /u/n_panda, I don't have any insight into your question about contacting them.)

It seems like your question is about how to get in touch with a famous person, is that correct?
