What did you do this week (and weekend)?
As part of a weekly series, these topics are a place for users to casually discuss the things they did — or didn't do — during their week. Did you accomplish any goals? Suffer a failure? Do nothing at all? Tell us about it!
I've been busy packing for my first solo trip to Ireland, going to be doing Dublin 2 days, then using Galway as a homebase for the next 7 days. I'm super excited but pretty nervous as well. I think I have everything packed and ready though. Anyone have great spots in those two cities? I'll have a car rental for a few days in Galway so I can see the Cliffs of Moher and one of the Aran Islands, and might stop in a few close by towns. Otherwise, I'm not trying to plan too much, I just have a loose idea of what I'll be doing each day.
Sounds great! Big endorsement for visiting Connemara and The Wild Atlantic Way. My partner and I bike toured it in 2017 and it was incredible (though very windy and rainy :) ). There are great places you could rent a bike - if you're so inclined - and follow the route. Though be warned, we were told in Dublin that the saying from US General Sheridan "The only good indian is a dead one" has been changed to "the only good cyclist is a dead one" in Ireland. So keep that in mind if you cycle. It's fully worth it though.
Near there, Letterfrack was pretty cool. And they have a great Hostel called the Old Monastery - that is as the name implies an old monastery. It's kind of spooky and haunted at night, but a great place to stay. There was also the most incredible mussels truck parked on the coast, just down the road - though it looks like it's a crab spot now. The other fun things Galway-eans? do it ocean swimming. You can find folks to join at Blackrock beach or Ladies Beach.
I hope you have a great trip!!!
I actually forgot to mention I have one of my last days set aside for Connemara, so I will definitely be heading there!
You are not the first person to suggest going swimming in Galway, which is really suprising to me, but so I think I pretty much have to at this point.
These are all awesome suggestions, I'm very into spooky things, so I will definitely check out the Old Monastery. Thank you!!
Glad to hear it! Let us know how it goes!!!
It was actually amazing, it was sunny everyday somehow!! There was so much to do, and I ended up actually canceling my car rental because I was so intimidated by the roads. But at the risk of blowing you up, here is a small list of stuff I did:
This is an abbreviated list obviously, I'm not including the tons of pubs, resturaunts and smaller things. Thank you again for the recommendations!!
Wow, so glad you had a great trip and thanks for the update!!! Amazing that you had great weather while you were there. I was just talking to my partner about our trip and we would have been there about 3 weeks after you and when we arrived in Dublin it was an unbelievable heatwave, so maybe it's just the perfect time of year?
Pretty Jealous about the Cliffs of Moher! We ended up skipping them because it would have added a side quest by bus or 10 days to the trip and we were trying to bike the Ring of Kerry. Every time we tell folks we decided not to go they look we have 6 heads, it must have been incredible!
Glad Connemara and the Wild Atlantic Way were nice! Any highlights from the Way? It's was definitely a little hairy, but definitely fun! And how cool is it you biked Inis Oirr?!?! I believe that is the island Banshees of inisherin is based on - and where filming was done. Did you get a chance to go check out the historic homes?
Sounds like an amazing trip!
Took care of a lot of little odds and ends this week after having my last two weeks tied up with automotive repairs. Finally mowed my lawn for the first time this year and it desperately needed it; I'm kind of surprised at how much better it looks.
Also had time to paint some WW2 miniatures this week; I've had this American Army for Bolt Action for about 4+ years now and when I first painted them, I was early in my career with painting, so they're a big slapdash and I've never been super happy with them. So about a month or two I started the process of repainting them with my better skills and I'm very happy with how they've turned out. This week I ended up painting and repainting a towed gun and crew and a howitzer with crew. Forgot to mention, I've also been rebasing everything as well because I did a bad job and used cheap static grass that looked bad, so that involves breaking everything off its base and then regluing for all that.
Anyway, I'm supposed to play my first game of Bolt Action in about 9 monthsand my first tabletop wargame in about 6 months tomorrow, which I'm hoping happens. My youngest got sick this week and I ended up having to pick them up from school with a 101* fever yesterday. They seem to be doing better now, but I've developed some very mild symptoms, so I'm hoping I'm better by tomorrow to play. I'll give my friend a heads up tomorrow morning and mention what's up and see what he wants to do.
I completed my annual Spring Startup Day. Im a gearhead and I have a plethora of vehicles and toys, all of them getting old but still roadworthy. Every spring I have a day where I go around the yard and start up the slumbering beasts that have sat 3' deep in snowbanks or hibernated in storage for the last 5 months after being through some days where it hit -35c. I always wondering how many batteries are dead or which ones just couldnt take the cold and froze something.
My satisfaction comes from the success rate. Yesterday was a good day. Everything started: 1 lawn tractor, 1 minibike, 3 SUVs, 1 diesel RV, 1 classic car and the simplest one, 1 little EV. Oh, and my recumbent bicycle also "started" although the 'motor' on that one seems a bit weak this spring.
