I'm not sure this is one of those situations. But I'm happy to be proven wrong.

“I’m not from Silicon Valley, so I don’t think technology can solve every problem,” he says. “But I do think America has a unique ability to solve some complicated sociopolitical problems with technology.”

He seems to be playing the game right in trying to win, not force, support for his technology. The problem with the solution this poses is three-fold however: It is quite expensive, computerized (one more point of failure, probably fail-safe however) and avoids a certain immediacy people who want home defense guns desire. I can see these being safely owned and properly stored by conscientious gun owners who would never have had a gun issue, not bought by the sort of owner whose kid winds up bringing it to school to show off because it was available to take. It would take a mandate requiring this technology to solve this problem, but that would still possibly not work 100% if people who shouldnt have access are registered to the firearm.

Forgotten Weapons has done an initial review of it, as well as a short interview with the lead designer, and in fact the immediacy of access for a verified user was one of the things they focused on very heavily, as during their initial customer surveys people said they'd be willing to pay extra for multiple methods of verification (face & fingerprints) in order to make it more easily and immediately usable.
