Pay-per-use VPS recommendations
I'm currently stuck in a hospital waiting room for probably the rest of the day, so brought my tablet along in the hopes of still being able to get a bit of work done. Plan was to use Termux to ssh into my home computer, but realized too late that this tablet's ssh key hasn't been authorized yet (it's pretty new), so that's a no-go.
Does anyone have recommendations for a good VPS host that charges only for the time you're using it? The day could still be salvaged if I could get into a fresh linux box that can run docker. The only pay-as-you-go VPS I've ever used is Amazon EC2, which is fine, but I'm hoping there are better options that are a little less cumbersome to spin up and tear down.
I've liked vultr quite a bit but don't tend to keep them around long term for anything meaningful. They have a lot of really cheap options too if you need to keep the running cost low. You can also pre-pay to let it pull from the account wallet than bill you directly.
Seconding Vultr, they’ve been rock solid for me for years
Exactly what I was looking for, thanks.
I've used Linode quite a bit for this kind of thing. Their instances are pretty cheap, and though they list monthly prices you only pay for the time you actually use.
Plus they're really quick-and-easy to spin up and manage.
Didn't Linode have a few high profile security breaches in the past few years? I used them a long time ago, didn't realize they charge by the hour. Maybe I will check them out again. Thanks!
.... yep, it appears you are correct. Cool cool cool.
I've not used Linode for any long-term projects, just "hey I need a VM to quickly test a thing" sort of stuff. Guess I'll be checking out vultr going forward though. Thanks for reminding me about Linode's less-than-stellar past.
Came here to say the same! Additionally you can file support tickets gratis and get a static IP. Wish I had found this sooner than later.
I did a few things on that but my god is it chaotic for just quickly running something and takes a bit longer to stage a new deployment. I did like it once setup but much more complex.
I'm a fan of Digital Ocean, been running assorted things on them for years.
Scaleway and Hetzner I think are also decent options.
