Bummed about Nova, outlook doesn’t look very good at all.

If something big at your work falls apart at about two on a Sunday afternoon how quickly do you usually take to get there? More than an hour or two even if you live within spitting distance I’d imagine. Let the people who are there deal with it.

What the hell is crap purporting as journalism? Wolf has a life I’d imagine, you can’t just go over to his on-site storage and get him out of stasis.

Holy hell in a handbag, that’s both fascinating and crazy!

I mostly flew international and remember coach seats easily for half of that with a little planning. Deregulation was ‘76, I’m not old enough to have experienced that, but by the time I was regularly flying by the late 80s it was a blast. Example: if you joined PanAm’s frequent flyer programme with zero miles in your account they’d let you order a premium meal in advance just because. After you’d clocked in some miles it got really good, I still have a first class amenity kit somewhere that came with a big bottle of some swanky aftershave, a razor, shaving cream, all housed in a really high quality canvas shoulder bag (I should dig that out and post some photos!).

I’m going to guess that high ticket price might be because of last moment business travel. For a lot of people taking a plane trip at the start of the 80s was a stills big deal and planning was the norm. I wasn’t on expenses and had to pick up a phone to book a ticket! Reservation agents were incredibly patient as I worked through dates to shave money off my trips.

I would respectfully disagree about the Y2K level event.

I believe it’s a stupidity level event where the ever loving grind to spare the ship for a ha’p’orth of tar has come back to bite asses. Graybeards who know about systems diversity and redundancy have been RIFed out of the workforce as it’s cheaper to have two juniors who can just look things up quickly and what they do works most of the time, right?

Except when things go wrong at this level, recovery is terrible, and it’ll end up costing them so many, many millions they could have invested a fraction of to do better. Not that this will be a learning event or anything, just ask Boeing a year from now after their legs get a gumming.

This wasn’t an IT act of God, Y2K was a damp squib as orgs of all sizes actively prepared to not let it happen. This fiasco was completely shareholder value and laziness.

I’m sorry you are suffering because of this wanton ineptitude. I hope you get home asap, safe travels.

Mostly experienced with Costco rental cars (better prices, free upgrades etc.) but have friends who have said they work like an old school travel agent when things aren’t so great.

Seems your experience is a little less helpful? I suppose when there’s a ground stop and a crazy event like this there’s only so much they can do. I’d be surprised if Costco didn’t get you your dough back, if they balk at least ask for the equivalent in a store gift card and work backwards in amount. People return frickin’ year old laptops and get away with it!

Former road warrior here, I’ve come to despise air travel probably as much as you, even with status is crap. The 80s and early 90s were the end of when it was actually fun.

    Safe travels tomorrow.

Salty former ad exec here, the older I get the more I see the same ideas recycled.

Kurt, Tabitha and John were the icing on the music cake and as they delivered ‘news’. It was as repulsive to Boomers then as it is today as the kids getting their ’news’ from TikTok.

I love the idea of taking shitty cuts of just about anything and making it spectacular. Who decided that bone marrow was God’s butter (RIP Bourdain)?

The transformative kitchen accessory has been the sous vide wand, it’s changed the way things get done in my kitchen and literally in a revolutionary way. I’m over 50 so literally is a literal meaning.

https://www.seriouseats.com/sous-vide-smoked-barbecue-bbq-beef-chuck-recipe (I stop at step 3 and finish in the cast iron, don’t have a smoker)

The St. Charles is amazing, 30 hours of cooking and I’ve yet to be disappointed.

Something simpler is chicken breast at 145f/63c for a couple of hours, normally revolver roulette with your intestines, but this is pastured meat. The texture is sublime, I’m usually disappointed when I have chicken at a restaurant these days.

It’s like mechanical keyboards or any other rabbit hole. Be careful out there.

Edits: there’s something about using an iPad with safari in this site that is super high latency. Editing for speed corrections.

Seriously, can’t they just take the receipt and trade them for 45 boxes of powder (based on poor mental maths)?

Back in the day these were the effects you got for the most part, I’m not sure how much throwing money around made so much difference. Haven’t rewatched in a few years but most of the space scenes, along with the handheld jumpycam effect, on the last viewing were pretty sold. It could be regressive enjoyment of the time clouding my judgement.

If you want sci-fi effects that stand the test of time go watch Kubrick’s 2001 again. Still so bloody good after all these years.

Have you watched BSG Razor? It’s bite sized and you might enjoy that.
