I feel like Firefox has been on a good run lately: better privacy, vertical tabs, a cute fox image you can have on your new tab page. I’ve always been a Firefox devotee, but I feel like they’re crushing it in particular right now.

Also, in the same way that Linux recently got a lot of interest from disgruntled Windows users, Firefox seems to have gotten a bit more shine to it for its adblocking capabilities in light of Chrome trying to tamp down on that.

I absolutely do not want AI in my browser, but if it can be an add-on I never use rather than something that's forcefed down my throat, well I'd take that instead if I can just ignore it. Here's hoping...

Regardless, Firefox will probably be my browser of choice moving forward so long as adblockers still work properly.

Is that based on any actual evidence or just a gut feeling? Because I genuinely don’t think most people want AI anything at this point. Almost all the people I’ve seen who actually want AI stuff are higher ups forcing it on their employees. Most people could care less about it.

Admittedly it's a gut feeling, but that gut feeling is based on the stark contrast I see from my normal social circle vs. the general public at large. My social circle feels like an insulated bubble of people who understand what AI is, what it is actually useful for, and where it's being force fed for no apparent reason other than getting in on the "hype train". But then I go into the general public or other forums and there is a much more hyped up view of AI. I see people no longer using the phrase "Google it" but rather "GPT it" or talking about how they just asked Chat GPT about things, etc. A large portion of the population just uses what gets thrown in front of them until they get used to it.

The general public is wildly different from my general circle of closer interactions which makes me suspect they would be just throwing away a large potential user base if they just ignore AI.

They've had AI integrated for a while in the sidebar. It's been pretty inconspicuous about it for a while, but if they're gunna start training data at all I guess I get to move on.

Mozilla announced a major privacy upgrade in Firefox 145 that reduces even more the number of users vulnerable to digital fingerprinting.

The new protections will initially be available only in Private Browsing Mode and Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) Strict mode. After testing and optimization, they will be enabled by default in the Firefox web browser.

Now, ‘Phase 2’ protections are being rolled out, which block requests to discover installed fonts, hardware details, number of processor cores, multi-touch support, and dock/taskbar dimensions.

Specifically, the new protections constitute the following:

    • Random noise is added to background images only when a site reads them back, not when they are just displayed.
    • Only standard OS fonts are used; local fonts are blocked, except for key language fonts like Japanese, Thai, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Hebrew.
    • Touch support is reported as 0, 1, or 5.
    • The available screen resolution is the screen height minus 48 pixels.
    • Processor cores are always reported as 2.

Absolutely. I just hope that Google doesn't get skewered for preferential browser agreements as Firefox (from what I can see) relies on Google's payouts for a large part of its budget.

If you like this sort of thing you might really enjoy Mullvad’s browser.
