I am flabbergasted I have not seen Outer Wilds mentioned yet. In fact, out of most of the singleplayer games out there that are decent to play with partners, Outer Wilds is one of the few that is almost a recommended-must to play with your partner at the same time. I hesitate to call it an escape room because that can scare some people off... it isn't like the We Were Here series (multiplayer but also a great playthrough with partners :D). But in the same way that you can't really talk to somebody about an escape room without spoiling the surprises, you're going to find yourself having no one else to gush over a discovery you find in that game until someone else you know has beaten it.

Unless, however, you start a game with someone else, which then gives you someone who knows just as much as you as any given time, to go 'Did you see that thing?! That thing was awesome!!!'.

I remember watching this video when it was released. I was absolutely enthralled by this kind of technology, and this was like glancing into a crystal ball of the future to come. I literally used this video in a research paper about the benefits of VR and it's application in burn victim therapy as well as the potential for general-population use. Since VR didn't exist at the time in a consumer-friendly manner (nor with the processing to actually run it), this was the next best thing, and a lot of my friends in highschool discussed this mechanic being used in conjunction with things like the Xbox Kinect or Playstation's camera/move controllers.

When I learned this guy got hired by google, I was stoked. It felt like 'one of us gamers' was getting recognition for what could be. It's too bad google dropped the ball a bit on their glasses/AR work, but the overall industry has taken this kind of concept and blasted into modern VR and AR now. What a wild ride 15 years has made, and we're not even done yet.

I've done video editing for a long time for personal projects, but recently used those skills to make an update/advertisement for work that came out fairly good. I also had an extremely short time frame to make it in, and I was definitely the only one with the skills and position to do it. It was very 'I don't know what I'm doing, but I guess I'm doing it well?'

I remember when the movie Bohemian Rhapsody came out and the amount of 'first time reaction' videos listening to the song 'for the first time' just flooded Youtube. I get if you're not in the music scene and you didn't know something like 'Twist and Shout' was specifically from The Beatles or something like that. But there were videos full blown screaming and yelling about how the song Bohemian Rhapsody was the greatest thing they had ever listened to and "Who is this 'Queen' band?!" discourse.

I'm sure there are people who legitimately had never sat down and listened to Queen and associated the music with the band, but plenty of people had absolutely heard of them before and were being incredibly disingenuous.

I have a lot to say about this topic that's very polar opposite to the general thread, but I think instead of trying to distill a bunch of jumbled anecdotes together, I'd like to simply refute the notion that the processing power and sheer size of data is too much for this kind of data mining to happen.

Most phones today quite literally have an 'always listening' capability, which is how any of the 'Hey Google' or 'Hey Siri' hands free phone accessibility options work. This has been available as [edit: recently as] at least 2015 and probably earlier. Apps also have plenty of cached data that takes hundreds of MB's of storage that they're updating all the time. I'd like to pose the following example conversation:

"I was walking in the park the other day and I had a huge craving for taco bell.

    Oh really?

Yeah, I really wanted a gordita crunch.

Oh my God, I love gorditas, I think I could probably eat 10 and I'd still want more.

    Haha, yeah.

Mark and I've wanted to go, but since we had Jessie we've been too busy making food for her.

Aww, that's too bad. How old is she now?

Uh, she'll be 10 months next week."

This conversation is 300-400B. Not kb's. Bytes. This is .001 percent of a kb. The phone does not need to process any of this data in-house, it just needs to find any and all time to beam 400 bytes of data up to Google.

Google then has loads of information to pick from that: The name of a couple, their baby, and favorite restaurant. All of this is 100% possible, and has been for some time, and it absolutely irks me when people try to make this out to something that it is impossible.

I have plenty of personal anecdotes, friends in advertising, and my personal sub-par technical knowledge I could use to rant for days about the fact that yes, you are being listened to. I don't want to get bogged down in arguments I don't have the energy to go back and forth on. I will simply say, with the utmost certainty that the phone in your pocket has all the capability and more (even older models) to send telemetry data to a third party, and that party (with a whole heck of a lot of incentive to sell that data for money) influences the ads you see.

I am putting this here for ease of access:

    National Suicide Prevention Line (US):
    1-800-273-8255

Remember, there is literally no judgement nor are there an penalties or consequences for calling, and the calls are kept anonymous (they may ask your name and whatnot, but they're not going to call your parents). If you have the feeling of "I don't want to burden up their phone line as someone who doesn't immediately need it..." Keep in mind most people who commit suicide never end up talking to anyone else before they do it. It's very easy to slide from "I don't want to burden anyone" to "I don't want anyone to stop me, so I won't bring it up to anyone". If you're having thoughts about suicide and you'd like to talk to someone about it, call the number. I'm sure the people working the lines wouldn't mind a not-immediately-urgent call once in a while.

I upgraded form my 970 to the 3080 (right before Nvidia went full troll-mode, if I had known at the time I would have gone AMD). I'm going to be honest, if I hadn't upgraded then, I'd probably have hopped to AMD the year after out of spite. I think an appropriate change in the market would be everyone else going AMD and Intel and watching Nvidia try to pan-handle out their cards for a while. They're not selling well because everyone who'd buy one is an enthusiast and anyone who's an enthusiast knows Nvidia is just trying to squeeze money out of people for as little gain as possible. A new card would be worth it if they came down several hundred dollars (for the higher-end card) and managed to actually make a jump in both a) power consumption and b) performance.

I think people are looking for new cards that can outperform the previous by more than marginal percent differences.

I mean, card gamers and board/video gamers are different groups. If you're talking to a board gamer, they're looking for expansion packs that are worth their money. If you're a video gamer, you're looking for non-toxic DLC.

(This is ignoring the csgo-skin-type gamers)

Card gamers are their own breed, and by the amount of them I've hung out with, a lot of them tend to be gamblers. There's no judgement in that from me, per say, and honestly I have less beef with the 'one-in-a-million-card-packs' card than I do with the overall concept of richer person=more likely to have good deck=more likely to pay-to-win. As a young kid with little-to-no financial backing, I was almost always behind my friends in those games because they simply could afford to open more packs while I was stuck with the starter.

I had employees scoff when I told them I was leaving the state for the first time in 10 years for a weekend excursion to Chicago (emphasis again, it was a weekend excursion, not like a week vacation). They were asking me how it was possible I'd never left the state even for a casual outing, and I had to bite my tongue really hard and just shrug instead of ranting some very blunt and insensitive comments about how not all of us come from money... among other rants. It's like... the wealthy older generation literally has no idea. They literally cannot conceive what we're going through. That Chicago trip (which I was lucky to be able to go!) will likely be the last time I go anywhere during my 30's, meanwhile I have coworkers just willy-nill going off to Colorado or Japan. And I'd consider my workplace to be incredibly progressive, just some of them don't have the perspective to fully 'get it', even if their heart's in the right place.

Which really just goes to show that anyone nefariously against progressive legislation is absolutely never going to budge. They can't empathize and they don't want to.

I think a lot of the thoughts you shared have legitimate merit, or at least have some grounds for hope (I'd like to think #6 will secure 44 million votes come the next election).

I think the only one I have a differing opinion on is #3. For myself, at least, the 3 years of payment pauses was the only reason I was able to get a house. It was the only reason I was able to move to a new job, since I was treadmilling on payments before that. I think for a lot of people, #3 wasn't as much as an option as you'd think, since a fair amount of people had to take that time to dig themselves out of a hole they'd fallen into before being able to put anything into a savings account. I absolutely agree, through reading between the lines, that there are some that just started spending on anything and everything they could since 'the loan payments disappeared!' and that their inevitable faceplant come October is (without tact) entirely their fault. But there are so many people like my recently-moved-out-roommates who were finally able to get a house because they saved this entire time during the pause, so that they could have some sort of assets to hold onto. Most people didn't have assets prior to the pause, and that was the main aim for a lot of people to get out of renter's hell.

edit: Wanted to put a quick stipulation in here that I may or may not have miss-read the tone of the original comment by interjecting my personal experience into it. I have specifically heard people call student loaners idiots for not having a savings account regardless of (or more like in defiance of) getting a home, like renting wasn't a big deal. This conversation has gone into a good direction, so all's well, but just wanted to clarify the tone and reasoning for my reply. Carry on~
