Static Shock is one of my favorite cartoons/superheroes of all time. It's such a finessed character/vibe to get right though, so put me in the 'intrigued, but worried' queue for that please.

It can be really hard to let go of the Windows side. I felt like I was letting go of the One Ring when I cleared my drive to go full linux. 😅 Having grew up editing old lets plays on Windows Vista/8 with Windows Movie Maker, it was kinda wild to realize I had a strong nostalgic attachment to the Windows interface I never really considered myself to have. Glad I took the plunge, but won't pretend it didn't have some mindflayer tendrils over my psyche!

    In short: I absolutely recommend.

At length: The service definitely appeals to a certain crowd, so the kind of vibe that works for me may not necassarily work for you. That being said, the shows can be summed up mainly in 4 categories (5 really, but I'll explain later), for which I will recommend my tastes:

Scripted Panel Shows: Game Changer is the poster child of the entire streaming service and was nominated along side VIP for awards last year for good reason. I'm not a trivia guy, but you learn sooo much obscure knowledge from Um, Actually!, Dropout's derpy step cousin to Jeopardy!

Improv Shows: There's a fair amount of spin-off shows from Game Changer that are fun. Make Some Noise has managed to lose sight of it's original vision, but the most recent season has genuinely had me cry from laughter enough times that I can forgive it.

Tabletop Shows: If you have my attention span (see: goldfish), Dropout has started to build up a great catelogue of TTRPG shows that go for maybe 4-6 episodes with simpler systems (I personally kinda hate D&D, but other systems are actually fun). Mentopolis is a great Osmosis Jones-spired noir thriller featuring Hank Green and Freddie Wong (among others), and then Never Stop Blowing Up is Brennan (the DM) essentially yes-anding everything the dorks around the table throw at him.

Stand Up Shows: They don't have a ton of hosted stand up shows, but the ones they do have are pretty good. Brennan and Izzy's Get Your Act Together was a lot of fun, and Hank Green's Pissing Out Cancer is pretty great (though technically released for free on youtube now).

The 5th Category I sort of lump together as 'College Humor'. They have a lot of their old sketches on there as well as some shows both old and new. Total Forgiveness and Ultra-Mechatron Team Go! are a couple of the bigger shows from that area. They're not currently a tentpole of the streaming service, but they're entertaining in their own right.

Final note: Political Leanings - The entirety of the Dropout content is going to lean left politically. This means all of the standup hosted on the platform, the casting decisions for the shows, and the overall space is going to lean in the inclusivity-minded, capitalism-bad branded kind of way. This is worn on the streamer's sleeve, but even though a lot of people won't be caught off guard by that, the crass humor could definitely lure people in that aren't ready for that kind of environment. Sam Reich (CEO) and others have even had commentary about how this can be a bit of a detriment as it can pidgeon-hole them into a strict lane of content lest upset their audience that has a very parasocial relationship with them (Which literally just happened with their crossover episode with The Rookie and other outreach projects.)

Here's to Rob Bonta hopefully making some ground with this.

Nobody was necassarily thrilled about the Netflix aquisition, but at the very least Netflix has never shy'd away from the 'both-sides' approach to the media on their service. But when Paramount came in swinging, everyone knew why. Netflix getting WB was an attempt at monopolizing the media market... Paramount is trying to monopolize a country.

As stated in the other comment, probably depends on the kid. It's not Hazbin Hotel levels of swearing or sexually explicit themes, but there's a couple jokes that are a bit more mature and the suggestion of swearing and middle fingers is very apparent.

That being said, I read things like The Giver, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Long Walk around my teenage years, so it's hard to say. It definitely leans on the lighthearted side of any dark themes it covers in general.

For a more gentle series, I'm Happy You're Here has some great calm content covering things like Anxiety and how to handle it.

I just want to +1 on the train of 'do not pay for a degree just to say you paid for a degree'. Even with a bunch of money, you never know (especially for an oldie like you ;D) when health issues can crop up, and the last thing you want is to get most or all the way through a degree and suddenly have something like that come up while you're vulnerable financially. There's an entire subreddit of /r/studentloans with some stories of just that kind of sudden landslide happening and ruining your life.

There was an adorable older couple that sat in on one my classes when I went to university. They were there via a non-degree sit in program. They were not obligated to finish assignments (though they did), they were merely obligated via their want of participation to interact in class discussions and the like. They did not have to pay for this either, as it was a free adult program.

If you don't want to attend a cheap community college, I would seek out if your local big-kid college has one of these programs. You can have the knowledge and connectivity with other students without slashing a hole in your wallet, and in some programs you don't have to worry about the homework if you don't want to. I would be extra cautious falling into the romanticized trap of the college workload 'challenge', as having gone through it myself I can promise you a lot of it is needlessly bulked out and convoluted.

To throw a slightly different take in here: I have a friend I made in college that was your same age, and he managed to float within the younger crowds via boardgames and similar geeky hobbies. We still call him his nickname from our freshman year, which was 'Dos-Ocho.'

I think your entire comment is spot on and I don't disagree with it, but I'd like to say annecdotally everyone is different, and some can socially still carry themselves through college when they're older. Hell, I think I'd actually do waaaaay better in all three facets now that I'm comfortably in my 30's and know who I am as a person (but for the love of God, do not make me go back).

Going to suggest a book/movie combo I actually havent read/seen yet, but I think Annihilation fits the bill pretty well from what little bit I've seen.

The movie Contagion I think would also be a good one. Sure, there are antagonistic characters, but the pandemic itself is one giant force of destruction. Having watched it for the first time during quarantine, it is also absurd how much it got right about the actual pandemic and future technologies that would aid in the fight against it.

You're complaining about someone supposedly saying for people in general 'to go fuck themselves', but then providing a quote mainly aimed at TERFs. Unless you're a TERF (to which I hope you're not), this should not apply to you?

The mechanics of what you should be pushing is 'hey, the previous thread got heated and killed the discussion due to it being locked, and I would like some kind of mechanic to counteract this problem,' and that alone would be a valid conversation to have. But it's sounding like you're trying to two-fer this conversation by additionally condemning a perspective that gets in the way of talking about a series you like. I don't think that approach is going to net you any gains. I think pursuing the forum mechanics and what can change there is going to be the most productive, because the rest is going to fall into the trap of subjective bias and moral blockades that will not let the conversation move forward.

There isn't going to be much of an excuse not to if you are already computer-literate. Pretty much everything that is going to work on linux works on Arch with a bit of fiddling. I will say driver version control is a lot easier to do on something like Ubuntu without potentially borking things, so depending on the exact software you're running for things, that could be... a potential reason? That is stretching though.

As ResidueOfSanity put well, using something that isn't Arch will be more boring, and that absolutely is a positive most of the time.

I can't say there hasn't been issues on arch myself, but a fair amount of the issues have been skill issues :P. I'd never recommend the average person tries it, but Arch has become a fairly stable OS with a much lower barrier for entry than 4 years ago. And as more people have been joining, the more documentation and community help there's been!
