I just want to +1 on the train of 'do not pay for a degree just to say you paid for a degree'. Even with a bunch of money, you never know (especially for an oldie like you ;D) when health issues can crop up, and the last thing you want is to get most or all the way through a degree and suddenly have something like that come up while you're vulnerable financially. There's an entire subreddit of /r/studentloans with some stories of just that kind of sudden landslide happening and ruining your life.

There was an adorable older couple that sat in on one my classes when I went to university. They were there via a non-degree sit in program. They were not obligated to finish assignments (though they did), they were merely obligated via their want of participation to interact in class discussions and the like. They did not have to pay for this either, as it was a free adult program.

If you don't want to attend a cheap community college, I would seek out if your local big-kid college has one of these programs. You can have the knowledge and connectivity with other students without slashing a hole in your wallet, and in some programs you don't have to worry about the homework if you don't want to. I would be extra cautious falling into the romanticized trap of the college workload 'challenge', as having gone through it myself I can promise you a lot of it is needlessly bulked out and convoluted.

To throw a slightly different take in here: I have a friend I made in college that was your same age, and he managed to float within the younger crowds via boardgames and similar geeky hobbies. We still call him his nickname from our freshman year, which was 'Dos-Ocho.'

I think your entire comment is spot on and I don't disagree with it, but I'd like to say annecdotally everyone is different, and some can socially still carry themselves through college when they're older. Hell, I think I'd actually do waaaaay better in all three facets now that I'm comfortably in my 30's and know who I am as a person (but for the love of God, do not make me go back).

The movie Contagion I think would also be a good one. Sure, there are antagonistic characters, but the pandemic itself is one giant force of destruction. Having watched it for the first time during quarantine, it is also absurd how much it got right about the actual pandemic and future technologies that would aid in the fight against it.

You're complaining about someone supposedly saying for people in general 'to go fuck themselves', but then providing a quote mainly aimed at TERFs. Unless you're a TERF (to which I hope you're not), this should not apply to you?

The mechanics of what you should be pushing is 'hey, the previous thread got heated and killed the discussion due to it being locked, and I would like some kind of mechanic to counteract this problem,' and that alone would be a valid conversation to have. But it's sounding like you're trying to two-fer this conversation by additionally condemning a perspective that gets in the way of talking about a series you like. I don't think that approach is going to net you any gains. I think pursuing the forum mechanics and what can change there is going to be the most productive, because the rest is going to fall into the trap of subjective bias and moral blockades that will not let the conversation move forward.

There isn't going to be much of an excuse not to if you are already computer-literate. Pretty much everything that is going to work on linux works on Arch with a bit of fiddling. I will say driver version control is a lot easier to do on something like Ubuntu without potentially borking things, so depending on the exact software you're running for things, that could be... a potential reason? That is stretching though.

As ResidueOfSanity put well, using something that isn't Arch will be more boring, and that absolutely is a positive most of the time.

I can't say there hasn't been issues on arch myself, but a fair amount of the issues have been skill issues :P. I'd never recommend the average person tries it, but Arch has become a fairly stable OS with a much lower barrier for entry than 4 years ago. And as more people have been joining, the more documentation and community help there's been!

How do we go about building safe zones at this point? When the government has failed, the poors are getting strangled into compliant labor, and citizens are mindlessly recording everything... what is the gameplan? Because besides turning into a forest gremlin I am really stumped on ways to actionably prevent this invasion right now.

I just want to put a quick sanity-anchor out there: The higher up the ladder you climb, the more out of touch the people around you will be. It's up to you to keep your head on straight and not forget where you come from, and apparently having money makes that hard to remember.

I work with people who will, without blinking, ask "why don't you buy a new car?" They're wonderful people, I will 100% vouch for their character, but the concept of no savings and loan-debt is literally invisible to those that have had it easy in life. You need to be careful that any 'mentor types' you're talking to aren't going to lead you in a direction that'll drown you because you don't have the financial padding they do.

And they will always downplay where they sit in comparison to you. Because for you this is a do-or-die moment, and for them this is a quick convo before they gotta pack for their flight to Fiji over the weekend.

What really kills me is when the fan service creeps in halfway through a show. It is devastating when you're immersed in the story and world, and then the writers/animators can't keep it in their pants any longer and you have to bail out. Hit it enough times that I just wrote off anime altogether, unless it's clearly something chill/vetted ahead of time by a friend.

I think with the kind of things found in the Epstein files, and the lack of action toward them, means that whatever kind of scrutiny there might be is going to be worthless. I don't mean to be a downer, but this kind of stuff can be found all throughout science fiction, and the elites keep looking at those dystopian novels and forming new business plans.

Tell a CEO they can have cheap gooey workers that can't build a union, and they won't care how much of a soul accidentally gets trapped in the process.

It really is quite amazing how much linux PC gaming has changed over the last four years, and linux in general has come such a long way.

The release of the Steam Deck was such a marker in time, too: All my coworkers at my last tech job sat covid-distanced in a circle outside, excitedly talking about all the ways we wanted to toy around with the Steam Deck when it would finally come out. It is surreal where we were vs. where we are, and it's just as dizzying trying to figure out where we'll be in another four years.

Unfortunately, the only cameras that are reasonably priced for the general consumer are going to be the smart cams, none of which are currently sold to just work locally. If there are ones like that, none of them are currently being displayed to the masses in targets and best buys. Sure, you can patch together a home system with cheaper parts, but that takes technical know-how.

And getting people to part with their cams and switch to alternatives is... well it's a bit of a catch 22 given they got the cheap camera because it was cheap, and probably don't want to pay for another.
