Deleted my earlier comment. I wanted to quickly remove my accidental spreading of possible misinformation. But, with the multiple comments on HN I found- after researching them, a lot of the claims being made about Proton being bad were debunked and a lot of the discussions about them had been flagged elsewhere in HN, as I should have expected (about them having decryption keys, and other FUD a poorly-written blog was spreading- I couldn't detect any truth about those claims, many of which were worded to sound one way, but meaning something completely benign)

Main thing it seems is if you cancel partially into a prepaid 1-2 year plan, you don't get to use the rest of the time, they just give you credit towards a future renewal. That seems gross, but it's not awful as long as they're transparent about it. It seems billing/downgrade/lock-in is maybe the biggest downside or threat to using the services.

I like the idea of multiple vaults. I miss having that with 1P now that I'm in Bitwarden. Tempted to go for the $12/year temporary deal and use it for a few select passwords and see how it feels. Maybe even considering the Proton Ultimate to get VPN/Drive along with it all for one price. That's somewhat tempting now that it will include a password manager. Their pricing seems to be a lot more reasonable than I remember it being years ago. I suppose they just offer more products for it now.

Update: Trying it out. Thoughts so far:

      • Multiple vaults are available, nice.
      • Import from Bitwarden was easy
      • Credit cards are not available yet so it could not import those and cannot autofill those yet
      • Secure notes are available and imported fine
      • The only app on desktop/PC are browser extensions No desktop apps, no way to manage passwords via a webpage, can only manage the account itself. This is a big downside for me, extension "window" in browser is not re-sizeable. Trapping my ability to manage my vaults in a super tiny little extension window is a pretty shitty choice
      • From other comments here, I do worry that Proton takes forever to update their products and fix bugs, and they keep moving into new markets without fixing bugs in old ones. That's troubling.
      • Sites are detected well so far- have not yet tried on mobile
      • UI is polished and looks good

Too early to tell, I suppose, but I might lean towards sticking with Bitwarden, idk yet. I think I got too "new shiny online service" hyped and now I'm having a moment of clarity

Oh, thanks for the heads-up! Never considered doing it that way, that's cool!

I'll probably give the pass a try since I'm currently using Dashlane and have kind of wanted to switch off them to slim down the number of services I have. Don't know that it'll be a permanent switch, though.

I think once they roll out vaults I might actually give this a look, as much as I love Bitwarden I’m kinda looking for a change to something different

That being said, I’m wary of having all of my eggs in one basket, so to speak. While I’d like to get away from $60/year for 1P family and this is basically free, I’m still pondering the long-term viability.

The free tier has logins and notes and email aliases. It does have paid plans too, which includes 2FA and multiple vaults. I wonder if they'd look to do some kind of family or specific sharing?

The free tier does have a limit of 10 email addresses. If you're not averse to paying for email, fastmail (paid) + bitwarden (free) is similar and iirc the limit is 1000 aliases and unlimited if...

How does this compare to KeePass? How hard is it to switch over from KeePass?

Currently a Proton Visionary subscriber and a fan of their services. I have no plans to migrate from Bitwarden. Proton Pass's feature set is still too limited. Maybe later.
