First the retirement thing, then the police shooting...it's almost like the french politicians WANT history to repeat itself. The french don't fuck around when it comes to their leaders tomfoolery.

Exciting to see what the military dictatorship does. I wonder which Bourbon heir will become the king of France. Maybe Felipe VI?

Except we've mostly become talkers and shruggers instead of doers. So it means we'll tolerate bad or even... evil is the wrong word, but along those lines, leadership to the point where they can build power bases that are very difficult to take down with talking and protesting. I doubt any actual violent revolutions have a chance at happening and succeeding in most of the "developed" world.

You get a few thousand people pissed off enough and no level of security will keep anyone safe enough to hold power, but you're right about the apathy.

Of course, acting authoritarian will totally cool tensions and not provoke further anger by not extending ability to “save face” for those protesting.

It’s clear Macron is trying to appease the police unions (or the French equivalent of such) and in doing so, is inflaming more anti-police sentiment by choosing them over everyone else.

The recipe for tamping down polarization is appealing to common ground and giving ability to save face. It seems Macron is trying instead to increase polarization, which will undoubtedly feed extremist grievance politics like which the fascist FN is an expert at. This is probably foolish. Perhaps Macron is gambling that by polarizing people even more, they will turn their rage upon each other and not Macron/En Marche.
