I have to say, 404 Media has some of the most interesting content. Their podcast is excellent, too.

It seems to only be interesting because it’s made-up. I haven’t seen any articles from them where what they’ve said is actually verifiable or of concern.

Yeah, really convincing.... This is a followup to this previous topic:...

OnlyFake, an underground website that lets essentially anyone generate highly convincing photos of fake IDs in minutes, has gone offline. The move comes after 404 Media used the service to create two, highly convincing photos of IDs, and used one of them to successfully step through the identity verification check of a cryptocurrency exchange.

“The news says that our generator was used to forge documents. This is complete nonsense. This has never happened before. At a minimum, because it cannot be used to forge documents,” a part of the message read. OnlyFake’s creator, who goes by the moniker John Wick, previously told 404 Media that his service could be used to bypass verification at a host of sites, including Airbnb and various cryptocurrency exchanges.

    Yeah, really convincing....

Slightly off topic, but I’ve been reading 404 Media’s peices, and they’re quite good. They always seem to find the most interesting stories about tech that I haven’t seen reported anywhere,...

I feel like the opposite. They recently had an article about the Apple Vision Pro that seemed like it was written by someone who had never actually used the device and yet was making statements about its usage and capabilities that were just flat-out false.

I’ve seen two other articles of theirs since and they all seem to take small, innocuous things - like being able to create a real-ish looking ID - and blow them out of proportion with complete nonsense - like being able to use the fake IDs for anything where ID verification would actually be required and validated. You can’t do that and it wouldn’t be accepted for anything worthwhile. A crypto exchange known for hosting illegal activity would accept a dubious, AI-generated ID? Inconceivable!

Now try using that for anything that might actually have value…

@Cfabbro thank you for the editing. I wasn't sure if the link I received in the email would act as an email wall bypass. Thank you as well for the additional tags.

NP. And unfortunately it did not work to bypass it. And sadly even archive.is didn't work to get around the registration nag wall, so I couldn't provide a mirror for it. :(
